PRAYER
Jerusalem (JONS) - Work began this week on the ex-cavaticm of a 6-1/2-feet deep and 5 yard wide depression along tile 27 yard length of the Western Wall to permit worshippers to "pray from thedepths»'.
This "trench", adjacent to the Wall, will be regarded as a holy place where head covering, modest dress and segregation of the sexes will. be compulsory. Close to this prayer alley will be placed an Ark of the Law and desks for Torah readings.
The desks are being made from spepially-hewn blocks of Galilee stone. The remainder of the square in front of the Wall is being paved, and rest facilities are being established.
There will also be a gallery running above the alley, where the general public will be able to pay their respects without interfering with worshippers and without being, interfered with by them.
The scheme has been devised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and is "provisional". An invitation is to be issued to architects : throughout the world to submit plans for permanent landscaping of the area.

reduce the number of returnees on the following day to 1,600 and then to 1,400.
Dr. Ben-Meir was convinced that extension of the time limit for the return of refugees would not have chained the situation because Jordan was unable to find sufficient numbers of prospective returnees. •
NOMINAL Some of the applications for return were nominal, he added, because many refugees were compelled by the Jordanian authorities to sign application forms, although they had no wish to return to the West Bank.
On the question of the attitude of Arabs in the occupied West Bank, he pointed out that the municipal authorities were continuing to function, and the elected and appointed crfficials were cooperating with the Israelis.
But uncertainty about the future of the West Bank had so far prevented full cooperation with the Israelis. Also, a small group of Arabs had e35)loited the freedom provided by the Army to threaten the majority of the population for co-operating.
Apart from those who refused to co-operate on political grounds, teachers and jucfees were also refusing to serve, mainly through fear of losing their pension rights in the event of a return to Jordanian rule.
Arabs who had lived in Israel since 1948 had behaved more quietly during the pre-war tension thaii ever before at times of crisis. Even Moslem Arabs had cooperated in Israel's war effort, mainly by working on communal settlements.
