CHIEF RABBI NOT AT LIBERAL NATIONAL CONVENTION
London (JCNS) - The Chief Rabbi, Dr. Immanuel Jako-bovits, did not address the meeting of the Rabbinic Conference of the Union of Liberal and Pr(^ressive Synagogues.
Last week, the Chief Rabbi tel^honed the Rev. Dr. David Goldstein, the conference chairman, and said that due to the publicity which had
been given to the proposed talk, he would not attend. But he suggested that the Liberal ministers might like to meet him for tea at his home at a later date.
After the conference a statement was issued confirming that Dr. Jakobovits had originally accepted an invitation to address the meeting.
The statement added: '"ITie conference r^rets that the Chief Rabbi subsequently decided that he was unable to attend, and Hopes that a meeting will be possible in the near future in keeping with the mutual desire to build bridges of understandmg between the different religious sections of Anglo-Jewry".

Haifa (JCNS) - West Bank Arabs are divided in their reaction to the boycott by many teachers and the respiting failure of a number of schools to reopen at the beginning of the month.
Some parents support the teachers' attitude, but a substantial proportion have voiced vehement protests.
Meanwhile, the younger pupils play in the street and sell anytMng they can lay their hands on to Israeli visitors - pencils imported from China, Lux soap made in'Nablus, beads from Hebron, and so on.
Many of their older brothers and sisters, the second-
ary school pupils, have been militantly in favour of the teachers' boycott, ''Leaveus alone and don't meddle in our affairs"; "We refuse to use .the text books you have censored", they have been shouting at visiting Israelis.
Other young Arabs, however, said privately that they would like the schools reopened, and that the boycott had been enforced ''from above".
There is no doubt that smuggling from Jordan and transfer of money to teachers and officials is an imiportant factor in the non-opening of the. schools, and themilitaiy authorities are tiyihgtosU^ this illegal traffic.

JOHDAN TERMED RELUCTANT TO URGE REFUGEES'RETURN
BEIRUT, Lebanon, Jordanian authorities have been reluctant to urge some 3,000 refugees to cross the Jordan River, even though Israel has authorized them to return to the west bank, Amman sources reported.
The sources said the reluctance tyas caused by the fact that the refugees' return would break up their families.
The report, received from Amman by telephone, said the Jordaidans took the view that the Israelis had split up families in granting the authorizations as a propaganda device, to show that Israel was allowing refugees tore-turn In greater number than was necessary and to demonstrate that the Jordanians could not fill the quota Israel had provided.
