JEjRUSmM POST PROTEST
or
Jerusalem. - The following editorial appeared in the semi-official Jerusalem Post:
•On May 2, Israel will celebrate its -ZOth Iride-pendence Day wijth a grand parade through Jerusalem, the awarding of the annual Israel Prizes, the.Song Festival, the Bible Quiz finals and other festivities. There will bfe much to celebrate, great conglomerations of people, including tens of thousands of tourists, and although the day is, of course, a full holiday for all ordinary employees, there will also be a prc^rtion of people who will have to work twice as hard as normally, from the police to reporters and broadcasters.
The previous day, which falls on May 1 this year, iis marked as Memorial Day for the fallen of Israel's wars, with services at. all army cemeteries. May 1, as Labour Day, is also one

of several (^tional holidays for government employees and teachers, who may choose between taking Labour Day or one of the minor religious festivals. May 1, celebratiedforsolong as the national holiday of the Labour mqj^ement has, if the truth is to he adniitted^ he-come something of a liability now that Independance Day, the State's national holiday, falls so close to it, sometimes just before, and some-times just after. Few mem-l)ers of today's Labour Party wish to march along with a red flag today.
The popularity of anything even associated with Russia has not become any more popular since the Six Day War, or with a generation that must go out to fight . terrorists armed with good Soviet Kalatchnikoff rifles. Nor has it gone unnoticed that May 1 has long been the favourite toliday for N ass e r is t-Coni munis t groups in Nazareth, where a parade is held annually to mark the occasion. ,
Falling on Memorial Day, it is unthink*le that May 1 should be marked by parades by any Jewish oirgahlzation this year, though no doubt those who wish will take the day off.
Only one trade will impose a compulsory work stoppage, the newspaper printers, who have decided that , this year too there shall be no newspapers on May Day (which is thus celebrated from sundown on the previous evening, like any religious Jewish festival). This is hot a matter of such
because its printers formerly t)elonged to a separate union, and "Hatzofe," of the National Religious Party, which has simply always appeared on May 1.
Mr. Yeruham Meshel. the Histadrut Trade Union Leader, has many considerations to balance now that joint lists with Mapam are being established by the Labour Party in a number of union elections, but the public and national inteirest cannot be disregarded in this
men as wish being a^le to take the day off, for in that case the majority of the papers could be produced without difficidty, but of a Histadrut ruling that the papers may not be published. Exceptions are made only for two small newspapers. One is the former Herut organ, which is now Gahal's "H ay p m." and which has always appeared on May 1,
fashion. Newspapers are an essential public service. To leave the great majority without newspapers for two days running at times of celebration and holiday, hut also of tension and general movement, all at the whim of a single union, is irresponsible.'

THIRD OF NEW IMMIGRANTS FROM THE WEST
Haifa, ..(JONS) - Of the 23i000 immigrants who arrived in Israel after April, 1967, 8,000 came from the West. They included about 2,000 from the USA and 2,500 from' South America, the chairman of the Jewish Agency, Mr. Aryeh Pincus, stated in Haifa.
He said that^ Western immigration could be raised to 20,000 a year if Israel changed her attitude to the Jewish communities in the West.
"We have always considered them a source of financial and political help, and should now change our approach and put immigration at the top of the list of priorities for these communities," he stated.
FIVE CANDIDATES FOR RABBINATE Tel Aviv, (JCNS).- At least five rabbis. Including one or two who are not citizens of Israel, have intimated that they are candidates for the post of Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviy.
Apart from Rabbi Ovadla Yosef (Sephardl) and Rabbi Yedidia Frenkel(Ash-kenazi), who have made their candidacies public, the names of the others have not been disclosed.
