El Al going into hotel business
London, (JCNS) — El AI, Israel's national airline, has ambitious expansion plans, botti In the air and on the ground. They provide for
new services, new aircraft and participation in hotel construction and manage-ment.
. The airline, one of the most
progressive in the world, is now handling record traffic, but it is rightly concerned at th<s scarcity of tourist-type hotels in Israel. It will now make its own contribution towards solving this acute problem.
El Al's plans were, outlined by its president, Mor^-dechai Ben-Ari. The airline will form a wholly-owned subsidiary for tourist services, .one pf which will be the construction and management of hotels in Israel/ possibly in partnership with other groups. The aim is to ensure that there will be a sufficient number of rooms at acceptable price levels to accommodate the expected increase in tourist traffic.
The airline will alsQ set
up its own catering service ii Lydda. At present it buys food for its aircriaft from private sources.
In the air, El Al's expansion program includes links between the Middle East, Africa and South America!, and the addition of Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles to its schedule. Next year it will begin non-stop flights between New York and Rumania^ and to Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires nd Montevideo. This year it has opened new routes from Tel Aviv to Bucharest, Geneva and Nice. In November it will begin three flights a week from Geneva to New York, and a non-stop service to Johannesburg will also be inaugurated.

Jerusalem, (JGNS) — Professor Yigael Yadin has embarked on a valiant, though tardy light to prevent a highway being cut through one of the few remaining natural beauty spots in West Jerusalem.
Earlier this year the district planning commission overruled plans by Sir Isaac Wolfspn to build skyscrapers on the slopes of the Valley of Rehavia, overlooking the
TORONTO
DEBATE
A debate about the elections of June 25th will take place this coming Monday evening, June 17th, at Toronto's Zionist Center, Marlee Avenue. The debate in which will participate the Hon, Mitchell Sharp, the Foreign Minister, Rev. Don Sterling and David Lewis, M.P., will be held under the auspices of the Herzl Zibn Club.
Church of the Cross and the Government centre.
Now, work is preceeding on a highway which will cut through the Valley and pass just a few yards from the Greek Orthodox Church dating from the fourth century.
The road is insisted upon by the municipality and supported by the police as a nieaiis of easing much of the pressure on the capital's fast-growing trafficproblefn.
Although the townplanning commission has approved the road, the National Parks Council, a public body under the Interior Ministry with Professor Yadin as chairman, has come out against the plan.
The Council has no powers under the law and can only protest. Professor Yadin has done so in letters to the press. Now, he told the JCNS correspondent, he intends to pursue the fight through enlisting the aid of Knesset Members and other means, even though work on the road has actually begun at one end.
To meet these expansion plans, Mr. Ben-Ari says that Israel is miakiilg the largest single, investment in the State's history. El Al, which has seven subsonic Boeing jets, has ordered four more, plus two of the huge Jumbo 747s which will carry up to 437 passengers, and two supersonic aircraft all made by Boeing. While awaiting the new aircraft El Al will add three hired aircraft to its fleet of seven jeis this summer.
El Al has made a profit every, year except in 1962 when it suffered a pilots' strike. There was an- increase of 93 per cent in the number of passengers carried in November, December and Jianuary last compared with the same period the previous year.
In the year ending March 1, El Al carried 176,000 passengers, nearly 50 per cent more than in 1966. In one week this year it transported nearly 10,000 tourists, a remarkable achievement for an airline less than 20 years old.

Tel Aviv, (JCNS) - Israeli Foreign Ministry circles were concerned this week to play down the impact of a number of press Interviews with the Israeli Ambaissador to Washington, Mr. Itzhak Rabin, in which, while stressing the fmida-mental community of interest with the United States, he spoke of grave differences of view "concerntag the way to peace and the form of the desired settlement"
He declared that "Israel faces harder political struggles in the coming months than those which took place last year. Our difficulties are iqcreasing as the Arabs take an attitude which, seemingly, is more moderate and logical, while we consider the change to be one of tactics only.
"Even those who are not over-optimistic (about the prospects of peace) are now urging lis to try and establish what the real Egyptian attitude is. Thelatest Egyptian moves make our position as regards public opinion more difficult
"By allowing that an Israeli withdrawal may he delayed until after a settlement is reached in indirect negotiations on ways to implement the Security Council's November resolution, the Egyptians are trying to impress the world with their alleged moderation..."
Underlying the Ambassador's words is the fact that Washington is understood to have let it known that ^ the opinion of the United States, a forma peace treaty with the Arabs is out of the question, and that Israel must cooperate with the United Nations' special envoy, Mr. Gunnar Jarring, in an effort to obtain a "peaceful settlement" which, although less formal, would - the Americans think - amount to practically the same thing.
In Jerusalem, the Americans would like to see the establishment of a Jordanian enclave containing most of the Old City. It goes without saying that their ideas on the future borders are dif-

AVOIDING FRONTAL CLASH The avoidance of a frontal clash with Washington is becoming the chief preoccupation of Jerusalem. Mr. Shimon Peres, the deputy secretary-general of the Labor Party, has suggested that this could be avoided by not entering into negotiations with Jordan, whoseterritor-ial demands are bound to he supported by the United States.
"Even though direct negotiations with Egypt might be far off, we should rather wait for them. If the choice is between a conflict with the Security Council (because of our refusal to withdraw in the absence of peace) or differences of opinion with the United States (because of a refusal to give in to territorial demands by JordaiO, we would prefer a conflict with the Council.
