THOUSANDS LEAVE PbtAND
Tel Aviv - Some 6,000 of Poland's 25,000 Jews have; applied for exit permits and most of them already have left, according to tourists who arrived here this week from Poland.
Applications started to flow in after the generial secretary of the Polish Communist Party, Mr. Gomulka, said that all Jews wishing to leave Poland could do so. It is believed that another 10,000 will seek to leave at the end of the school year^
According to the tourists, most of the Jews who will remain in Poland either will be partners in mixed marriages or old people.
They reported that Jewish intellectuals were finding jobs as tram conductors and such.
. My informants said they personally witnessed a large group of Polish Christians escorting a departing Jewish couple to a train hi Warsaw and bidding them farewell, despite the fact that they were being photographed by security police.
However, they added, many Polish intellectuals and ordinary working people sympathized with the Jews primarily because they were opposed to the Government in general.
MORE LOSE THEIR POSTS
Three Jews and a non-Jewess married to a Jew have been dismissed from the Polish Foreign Ministry, and two Jews have been dismissed from Poland's delegation to the Geneva disarmament conference.
The latest dismissals are those of three departmental heads: Adam KonradMeUer; Marian Karol Wajda; Jan Szelubski; Mrs. Maria Wier-na,
Non-Jewish herself, she is the wife of a Jewish former Foreign Ministry employee, Juliusz Burgin. She was accused of "sympathies towards Zionism."
The dismissed head and deputy head of Poland's delegation to the 18-nation disarmament conference in Geneva are MieczyslawBlu-sztajn and Joseph Goldblatt. They attended the cwjference during its sessions from January to Marcl^
When the conference re^ sumed this month, however, neither man was there and an official Polisb announcement said that Warsaw's permanent envoy to the U.N. hi Geneva, Henryk Jaroszek, a non-Jew, had been made head of Poland's delegation at the conference.
TEACHING 100 CANARIES TO SING
Tel Aviv - Israel's own "Doctor DoolitUe", a short plump man with hornrimmed spectacles, stands before his bhrdcages, purses his lips iand emits a longj low whis-Ue. ,
"E flat," hesaySi "They loveE flat."
A throaty chirrupmg be-ghis in one of ^e 12 small cages, then a liquid coohig, followed by a staccato chirp.
The sounds gather momentum, and soon 100 canaries shig in unison, in E flat.
The small man grms triumphantly. ,
"These birds can sing," he exclaims. "These bhrds are artists."
The birdman is Yitzhak Fisher, a 50-year-old income tax consultant who runs the only academy of canary music in Israel.
"It's a labor of love, because I'm a music lover," Mr. Fisher said. "It payis, too, however."
The man does not actually teach the canaries to sing. He supervises.
