Reiervalloni conflrroed for (he lord Simcoe Hoiel. Toronto
An Andalusian fellow-prisoner named Perez, was in tlie habit of lighting a Candle every Friday night .and placing it in apuddhig-bowl;_ Thls,^ he claimed; brought him good liick for the coming weelc. Could this be a folk-relic of the Mar-ranos? Surely it was the Sabbath candle, and the pudding-bowl was merdy to keep it secret from the neighbors.
The Perez family had pre-r_ sumably preserved-their Jewish tradition from Inquisition days; by now they had forgotten why they lit the candle, but they remembered it distinguished them from their neighbors...;
Whenever any Catholic dodged mass the priest or a fellow-Catholic would murmur reprovingly, "Judio,ju-dio . . ."But It vas not meant in any sense to be . derogatory of Jews and was perliaps one more survival of Marrano days.
The word "Marrano", however, though not defunct, is quite devoid of its earlier meaning. It was a term of abuse at Christianizing Jews and later at Judaising Christians; but Spaniards have forgotten its use in that context. In slang a "Marrano" implies renegacy, vileness, slime, everything detestable, but it is quite devoid of racial or religious connotations.
The Sephardim, both those who preserved their Spanish culture abroad since the Expulsion, and the " New Christians", who remained in Spain as crypto-Jews ire, on the contrary, regarded with a great deal of respect, " Marr anbs estos? Eso si que no! La vanguardia de la re-sistencia del siglo quince ellosi" ("Those are not Mar-ranos! Certainly not; they were the backbone of the fifteenth-century Resistance!") said one prisoner to me.
This might come asasur-prise to General Franco, who is reported (like many of the Spanish upper-class) to have Marrano ancestors.
I suppose it would be true to say that in most European prisons the igiiorant type of antiseihitism must be well represented, but this is certainly not the Case in Spain. There does linger a belief in the old political-Catholic myth of the Jewish Freemasons, but few Spaniards of any degree of literacy take it seriously any longer.
.ARAB PRISONERS
An old priest used to wander in to see me and the only Jewish himate of the prison (an elderly Malagan); be set his heart on converting us and would berate me on the crimes of Henry Vin (for which neither I nor even any of my Scottish ancestors was in the least responsible), and the Jewish prisoner on those of Lord Rothschild, who, he evidently believed, was the senior "Elder".
Most of the tramps and petty criminals in Spanish prisons have an inveterate hatred for the Arabs, who constitute a not inconsiderable part of their numbers and represent an economic threat to them.
Apart from tWs, few Spaniards have forgiven or forgotten the excesses of Moorish troops during the Civil War. As a result, when it seemed (so far as we knew, judging from official broadcasts which favored the Arabs) that Israel was about to be wiped out by Arab armies, there was a tremendous wave of sympathy for the Jews.
The "politicals" were divided, of course, because the Communist Party, and the Maoist and Trotskyist factions were obliged to follow the pro-Nasser line.
The libertarian movement, on the otherhand (the anar-chosyndicalist CNT — National Confederation of Labor — and anarchist youth), was extremely sympathetic to Israel./
in the first place, she was identified by them with opposition both to Nazism and to Communism of the Marx-
ist brand; in the second place they made a somewhat broad piarallel betweenlsrael'scit-izeh army and the "organized indiscipline" of Dtirruti's column in the Civil War, and between the kibbutzim and the anarchist collectives of the same period.
Some of the prisoners belonging to the libertarian movement were so determined to Identify themselves with Israel (while accepting that "one government was as bad as another"), that there was a popular rumor that the late Mrs. Ben-Gur-ion had been an anarchist; that she had been active in the Russian movement before marrying Ben-Gurion, and that she never identified herself with Zionist politics or the dtities of a "First Lady" and remained in private life, still staunch to her early l>eliefs. CORRUPTION
Spanish priisoners unable to carry out their religious obligations may find consolation in the fact that it is possible to order almost: anything if one can pay for it.
So corrupt were the warders and so poor the food that the authorities accepted the inevitable, and allowed acan-teen to be established where food could be bought, or sent in.
