In an exclusive interview De Shalit noted that the increase in tourism had been paced by a potent Jewish interest in travel to Israel. "The great sense of identity with Israel which swept North American Jewry during the trying days of May-June, 1967 was quickly turned into an interest in seeing the country itself," he said. "By the time Octol)er-Nov-ember, 1967 came around the trickle had ttirned into a torrent. That interest has continued unabated to this day. I should add that prospects for next year are just as good,"
Contributing to the unprecedented mid-winter interest were the factors of the 20th Anniversary celebrations ••. . «, and the new low air-fares

American tourism to European Tourism," De Shalit said. I'There is no doubt that the initial response following June, 1967 was overwhelmingly Jewish in contents" It is interesting to note that the pre-June, 1967 fig^ ures showed a Jewish jger-centaige that was only 3^.
De Shalit noted that the hundreds of thousands of tourists who have been visiting places such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviy, Hebron, Haifa, Beersheba, the Negev, Sinai and th^ Golan Heights had put pressure on tourist facilities in the country. New hotels^ recently completed, and others now in various stages of construction and planning should answer the' demand^ he feels.
"In 1968 Israel also witnessed a major flow of young Americans who came to Is-. rael and participated in sum^ mer camps and Kibbutz programs, as well as seasonal and full time programs of the various universities. To help meet the demands of this group Tourist Ministry funds were given to some of the above institutions, which they then used to expand their accommodation capabilities.," he said. De Shalit pointed to the activities of Moshe Kol, Minister of Tourism, in this specific area. Kol has l)een urging an increase in this movement, particularly among American- Jews. "Visits of this nature tend to strengthen the bonds between the two communities and result in a strengthening of Jewish identification," said De Shalit "A young Jewish visitor returns strengthened in his religious and commupal associations. A link has been
modation and trained personnel. "At priBserit there are 1700 ropm^i under construction with another 2500 about to begin. Among them is a new Sheraton and Hilton in Jerusalem. Ihtercbhtin-entjd in Jerusalem will also add rooms, ajs is the Ganei Yehuda and the Moriah. The Tirat Batsheba is opening and together with the Central Hotel, will cater to Orthodox visitors. The King David already has its additional 90 rooms in use.
"Similiar developments iare in store for Tiel Aviv," said De Shalit "It is all in answer to the demand we are feeling. A demand which shows every liklihood of continuing."
"Our national carrier. El
Al is also keeping pace with the developments iii the Israel tourist traffic. For the first time, during the 1969. high season^ El Al will - riot. lie flying any rented equipment," noted De Shalit .
At the end of January, 1969 the airline wUl be: taking delivery on another Boeing and will take delivery on a second at the,end of May, 1969. In all the airline will, have 25 flights a week in the peak season of which ten wiU be non-stop New York to Tel Aviv.
De Shalit pointed out that the popularity of the Israel national carrier had led it to purchase a building near the International Hotel at Kennedy Airport The building will be used as a second
terminal next year. The purchase of the building was prompted by the pressure on
existing facilities and the exr pahsion limitatloiis of the present site.

forged with Israel which appears to withstand all str6ss "
Another more unique development in 1968 was the increase in the number of Bar Mitzvah and Honeymoon travellers. "Both of these movements are just in their infancy," said De Shalit "but we can expect their corisiderabie development in coming years."
De Shalit felt the country had experienced a shortaige of l>oth manpower and accommodation during the high season. But he added that construction and training programs now under way should resolve these problems. The programs, all backed by the Ministry of Tourism, will result in significantly increased accom-
Jerusaiem, (JCNS) - Israel is not at the moment laying claim to the tiny is^ land of Sanapir, in the Straits of Tiran close to the Saudi Arabian shore.
However, she has told the United States that she will never allow Saudi Arabian forces to ocQupy the island.
This was stated in the Knesset on Monday by the Prime Minister, Mr. Levi Eshkol, who told a question-, er that Saudi Arabia's claim to Sanapir was raised by the USA Secretary of State, Mr. Dean Rusk, during talks be-
tween Mr. Eshkol and Presi^ dent Johnson in Texas in January. The issue was further discussed between American and Israeli officials^
Mr. Eshkol recalled that Israel had occupied the island during the Six Day War aiid had controlled it since then by sending in occasional patrols and making periodic landings.
While Israel had not gone fiito the question of who owned Sanapir, he added, there was certainly no question of allowing Saudi Arabian troops to take it over.

The percentage breakdown of Israel travel reflects De Shalit's observations. In the jmonths December, January and February of 1967-68 a full 42% of Israel's tourism came from the Americas with approximately 35% coming from the United States. It showed an increase of over '50% over 1967 and 26% rise over 1966. An estimated 70% of the North American tourism was Jewish.
In total approximately 180,000 North Americans will have visited Israel ,by tfeendof 1968. r
"Since those eventful days the balance of Jewish-Christian tourism has returned to more normal proportions, as has the balance of North
