Swimming is one of the most important exercises one can do. Apart from being recreational, it exercises most of the tx)dy's muscles and goes a long way to keep a person healthy.
That's why Eunice's Swim School teaches people of all ages — infants to adults — the necessary skills as instructed by the Red Cross swimming program.
There is no age limit to learning, in fact the younger the child the better. Karen Scott, daughter of owner Eunice Taylor, began instructing her 4^year-old at the age of three weeks.
Scott said by taking lessons a toddler who falls into a pool has learnt to tread water, get to the edge of the pool and climb out. "This helps to prevent drowning in any backyard pool.
"The first thing we teach any child is to feel comfortable and get over any fear they might have of water," she said. The water in the pool is
always warm so "the kids don't mind putting their face in the water."
Eunice's Swim School teaches the Red Cross program from "Yellow" levels through to "White." At first a tot learns with its parents but, depending on how comfortable the child is, can learn without its parents at the age of 2 or 3.
The school teaches in semi-private groups of up to three children ^ in groups of up to six.
One program lasts 12 weeks but, depending on the child's skill, a child can progress to different levels in that time. For instance, a child who begins at the yellow level may end up in the red level by the time the 12-week period is over. "This is where we're different than other schools," Scott said. "We train each kid individually."
Once children have gone through the Red Cross program they can learn life-saving skills and get the Bronze Cross. This entitles a 17-year-old to work as a lifeguard.
This fall, Eunice's Swim School hopes to offer the National Lifeguard Certificate program.
Scott said every child who goes through the program learns to swim. "There's never been anyone not able to learn. We go right to the basics and drill these basics over all the levels. Children don't come here to play, they come to learn."
Eunice's swim program breaks down each stroke into drills. "It may not seem they're learning the front crawl, but they are," Scott said.
Scott's mother began teaching swimming in 1978. "She got into instructing when I got a job as a lifeguard," Scott said. "The pool needed instructors so she got into it." Eunice opened her own business three years ago.
There are about 15 swimming instructors, all of whom are trained in Eunice's special style of teaching.
Courses are held at the recreational centre at Parkway Forest Drive In Willowdale. The recreational centre also offers an assortment of programs from dancing to karate.
