QUESTION: My daughter, in her early 20s, has been happily married (to hor difld* hood sweetheart) for six years, lifey have three beautiful children, aged 6 wedu to
.:5ydara.^/^
I baby-sit one day every week for a couple of hours so that my daufj^ter can have her hair washed and set. She takes the oldest diiid with her.
My dau^ter and son-in-law like to get out once in a whfle (appnndinately eveiy three wedcs) for a movie and dinner. Her baby siuer is not always avaOaUe, so they
; askme.
My husband and I fed that a mother with three small x^dren should not go out unless it is an emergency or a family ai^.
Maybe we're old-fa^oned, but if par-entr want children^ they should stay home and raise them until the children are old enou^ to be on their own.
My dau^ter feds I am wrong. '
ANSWER: Even vriien the youthi^ marriage turns Out well, the parents still see it as a reflection on them that Adr duld wanted to leave diem at soeariy ani^. T6o, tiieeariy marriage of tiieir youngster make some parents feel oldw than their years.
llirou^ undoubtedly happy about your daughter's good adjustmrait as a wife and mother, you still feel she took on too much, too soon. In refusing to baby-sit for them, evei once every diree Wedcs, vdien your daughter ran't get a baby-sitter, you are still sasying that if they had planned wisdy and acted with more leqKmsibility, they wouldn't need your hdp now.
)R. ROSE N. IRANZBUU
Actually, your daughter is addng very , little when she requests that you babiy-dt ^^tor iSer once in a great v^e. Bat one must quiBstiaii why you see this nndl request as [ an iinposid(Hi. It could oonv^ the impUca* tioa you don't fed like a grandmother , > ttiid ddiottijjh you love the Utde ones, you haven't accepted th«h obmpletdy; as your gFandtehfldren.
to ARGUE THAT THE YOUNG COUPLE MUST STAY home evttyt nig^t until the diildien are old enough to take care of tiiemsdves is like sentencing them to prison for marrying and becoming parents. It is ladier inconsistent that you will baby-sit vriien your daughter goes to have her hair dcme, but reftm to do so when the young couple want to go put for a ni^t of ideas-ure.
It is always in fuhion for grandparents to want to be vnth dieir grandchildren, idiether to play vrith them or to take care Aof them in die parents' absence. It is all to the good that your dau^tor feds free to mdce ihu request, and to djisai^ widi you when you turn it down.
It diows great patience and understanding for a person of her age and stage in life. $he is not being demanding or irresponsible when die adcs 3fou to hdp her once in a wfaOe.
For the rdationdiip between the two Cunilies to grow and mature with the years, you diould see this as a gift of love and not as an impoation. lliis is to be responsible, emotionally.

CONVERTS' PROBLEMS

The rally was sponsored an ad hoc committee of heads of all the ultra-Orthodox day scho(ds inNewYork ftom the Satmar to the Lubavitch yeshivot and Bais Yaacov schools. Girls from as far away as Baltimoane attended the rally with ttieir teachers and principals.
Rabbi B.B. Borchardt of Agudat Israel of America said that there bad been cases of girls in Orthodox schools who had worn mini-skirts, which was roughly defined as any skirt which does not cover the knee. He added, however, that a debate was going (m in Orthodox circles about whether this meant the seated knee or the standing knee.

Where do youdrawtheUnebetweenoldahd young? Middle aged there's no such thing. Because everybody thhiks of himself as young, except the kids who consider anyone over twenty real old.
And even that's generous^ Because how many times have you heard a twelve-year-old exclaim, "Gosh, I'll be thirteen soion; I'm getting old!"?
; Ha, if only you were thirteen again, you think. Innocent^ that's what; All day long the girls talk about Uie boys. And that's good because zay holten beim redden (they bold oy talkhig). It's serious when they don't talk.
And, behig thirteen, they're surprised you can still stand on your own two feet
When Mama was about the age I'm now, I at fifteen thought she was Methusalah's twhu When the radio played something that brought back memories of Papa's and her years of courtship and shetlrooled, Icouldn'tgetoverit I told her to stop acting silly, she was an old lady. I couldn't picfaire her young and giddy. Her weddtag picture is arlot — short skirt^ veil attached to something that looks like a headache band. It was another world.
Then when 1 went through the hifantfeedhig stage, I bad to listen to her old^bioned comparisons. Like, how lucky this generation is to have readymade cereal; she had to l)pil barley all night.
I began to wonder how 1 managed to grow up.
Nu, now I fhially understand. And at ttiis stage there's no generation gap between Mama and me because my kids already have relegated me to the old age pile.
The other day, for instance, I refused to buy a mint flavored chocolate cake. Too many fortes. 1 knew the kids would feel sorr fright after they had eaten it.
But you know bow impulsive your pridie and joy can be. And contrary, don't ask! So Anne went and bought it herseU.
Loaded with other packages (she does carry them thinking I'm too withered to hold a tissue), she said. "Here, you carry the box. But carefully. Don't smash it"
Well, it happened to tilt a little. So what do you Uihik die brat had Uie khutxpa (nerve) to yell? TMsyou won't believe.
"Ma, you're becomtog senile!"
Me, senile! So I needed Columbus todiscover America so I should live to hear my own children caU me senile?
The only excuse I can tind is maybe she wanted to use one of those fancy words.
It reminds me when Mae onCe told me, "Watch out for Mama. She handed a store clerk a ten for a five. It must be old age."
So maybe I deserved that one, for bow many times I recall when Mama would say, "Your children should tell you what you tell me."
Even when you feel good, they don't let you. Sometimes 1 hear a nostalgic hme that sets me in motion. So 1 take a couple of steps M rhythm. All of a sudden one of the darlings remarks, "Mommy, go easy. Dcm't your Iwnes creak?" , So they squelch you before you even start And you know what? Tbiey drum it hito your head so much, ycMi begin to think maybe they're right Maybe you are tottering on ttie brink of old age. If they say it mhmistamm (could be) it's so. According to them, you're senile, you can't move your feet What next?
But don't worry. Their kids'll say the same to them. And I expect to live to hear it
Nu, at forty-something I'm supposed to sit on the shelf. Well, nisht bei Muttya (not by Muttya)! I don't give up easily.
