Haifa (JCNS). - A newkind . of "imtnigrarit absorption base" has been establisjied in Upper Nazareth to which newcomers now are taken directly from thieir aircraft or ship and put straight into vacant flats.
During the past ten months, 350 immigrant families have settled in Upper Nazareth, together with about the same number of veteran Israeli families, according to the chairman of the council. More than 600 homes are being built in the town and will be ready soon. Another 500 will follow.
The population of Upper Nazareth has risen to more than 17,000.
The town represents an important contr ibution to Jewish settlement in Galilee where the population is 65 percent Arab and 35 percent Jewish. This, it is believed, explains the terrorist activities among Galilee Arabs, discovered by Israel's security services last week.
Brussels (JCNS). - Israel, together with Spain, suffered a hard knock last week when the European Economic Community withdrew the 40 percent tariff cut on citrus fruit imports which had been granted in September.
There had been tremendous pressure froiu counts ries outside the Community, particularly the United

ARE YOU A $20,000 A YEAR
I am looking for a successful businessman who is accustomed to being independent. A man who is not easily satisfied and who would not be contented doing the average. 1 offer: a key position with the leading company in a new exciting expanding industry; a clear path to the top; and very large earning potential. Toronto interviews mid-January. Send resume to: Harold Rubin, Box. No. 3495, The Canadian Jewish News, 3433 Bathurst Street, Toronto 19.
States, for the withdrawalof this concession which, they feared, would harm their ow.i citrus exports.
They threatened to seek condemnation of the Market countries at the forthcoming meeting of Gatt (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade). .
On the other hand, Israel and the Common Market are now said to be "close to agreement'' on a five-year _ preferential trade pact which would include a 45 percent reduction on tariffs on Israeli, industrial imports;
However, the withdrawalof the citrus tariff cut and Israel's demands for tariff • cuts on other agricultural produce, could delay the sighing of the agreement.
Amsterdam (JCNS).-More than one-third of Holland's 15,262 married Jews - 39 percent - have a non-Jewish partner, and one-third of Jewish children under 20 who
live with their parents tiave a non-Jewish father.
The latest survey of Holland's Jew i s h population gives these figures and many others. Carried out by the Dutch Foundation for Jewish Social and Welfare Work, the survey which will be published early next year, shows that there are 29,675 Jews in Holland. This compares with previous estimates of about 26,000 or fewer.
Women outnumber men by 15,400 to 14,20.0. In the general population, the sexes are almest evenly balanced.
One-sixth of Dutch Jews are foreign-born, and more than half have no connection with their local comTiunities. Of the 29,675 .Jews of Holland, 15,700 live in Amsterdam; 2,100 in The Hague; and 1,500 in Rotterdam,
While 9.7 percent of the general population are over the age of 65, 15.5 percent of Dutch Jews exceed that age.

ance of the distress rockets. In his defense at the official inquiry the Californian's captain offered some rather incredible testomony as to . why he had not responded to the Titanic's call.
Marcus has some other interesting comments to m.ike on the rescue operations during the Titanic's floating moments. Although the order "women-and children first" was generally obeyed there were glaring instances of violations of that edict.
Two wealthy male passengers leaped into one of the lifeboats with such abondon that they broke the ribs of a woman seated below. Ismay, one of the executives of the White Star Line, also found a place in the lifeboats. This happy circumstance was to follow him for the rest of his life because most people felt that he should have been among the last to leave the ship.
One of the niost macabre aspects of Marcus' story concerns the debates which raged among the lifeboats after the Titanic had already gone down.
People in these boats could hear clearly the cries and screams of passengers who had jumped off the vessel just before the end. There were literally hundreds of bodies floating around the sinking hulk - many still alive.
The natural thing would have been for the lifeboats (many of which! still had empty spaces) to return to try to pick up as many survivors as possible.
Except for one boat, how- . ever, none returned to. make the effort. The argument was that the fragile lifeboats would either be drawn into the deep by the Titanic's suction or that the mass of survivors would try to get on the inadequate supply of lifeboats and capsize them. It was a difficult moral question that was solved simply -by inertia.- ' —
"The loss of, the Titanic," ; writes M a r c u s,."was, surely, a classic-case of that . overweening pride and arrogance which provokes the rath of the gods, known to the Greeks of old ashubris."
"The new liner was the largest, most magnificent and most sumptuously appointed vessel which had ever put out to sea. She was the ship that God Himself could not sink."
"The appalling tragedy was to be a lesson to seamen of all nations. For at sea tiie price of safety, then as now, must be unceasing vigilance.-'- '

Murray Teigh Bloom does not like lawyers. He tells wiiy in his The Trouble with Lawyers (Pocket Books), a severely critical account of un-etiiical practices inthelegal profession.'
Author Bloom is particularly exercised with what lie considers are exorbitant fees fixed by; a union tliat answers
to no one. In his well researched book Bloom also takes lawyers to task for their "contigency fees" and their percentage charges on probating wills.
Henry Mencken, the great American editor, writer and critic is the subject of a lengthy biography by Carl ■ Bode; it is called simply Mencken (Southern Illinois University Press).
Among the many fascinating aspects of Mencken's life which Bode illuminates is the role played by Charles Angoff during the latter's stint at the old American Mercury - a periodical considered to have been the outstanding literary journal of its day.
Angoff (who is today one of the best American-Jewish . novelists) has described Mencken as an anti-Semite who admired Hitler's methods in dealing with the Jews,
Bode, in his biography, argues that Angloff's antipathy towards Mencken was motivated by personality differences. Mencken, reports Bode, loved to tease Angoff. The latter often took seriously what Mencken merely offered in jest.

The rateof Jewishtourism from abroad continues to rise in spite of the occasional commotion. The overflow of Jewish tourists in West Jerusalem IS accommodated m Arab hotels in East Jerusalem,^ so they_also benefit. . /^he""most surprising result [of the reintegration of the two halves of the city is that some \pf the thirty Arabphysicians lit the eastern part now have Je^'ish patients. Everyone tl»ougiit--that the movement would be wholly the other way - Arab patients going to Jewish doctors; (actually, the-\_ Jewish hospitals are full of Arab patients). It is well known that some Jews like to consult several doctors at a time, so why not an Arab doctor as well?
