TORAH - SCROLL
The most sacred religioiJs article of the Je.ws is the Torah-Scroll.
Housed in a special Holy Ark in every synagogue, the word of God is read from it several times a week.
It contains the five Books of Moses, written on specially prepared parchment.
Dating to the days of Moses, the Torah-Scroll forms the very core of Jewish tradition and heritage.
To the faithful it is the Divine Revelation, the code of instruction guiding .every facet of man's life. Hence every word and letter is scrutinously studied for all obvious arid latent meanings.
The last of the Torah's 613 commandments obliges every Jew to write a Scroll for himself, hire a scribe to write one for him, or purchase one, in addition, a Jewish king has to have a second Scroll, to remain on his person thiroughout the day. Thoug;h nowadays one may suffice with the writing or purchase of book-type Chumashim and other sacred books; there still remains a -■ Mitzvah to write a Scroll. Therefore many people still strive to dp so oh their own or inassociatipn with others. ■ All Torah-Scrblls contain the'.same .five Books of: Moses. Thus •. it seems ^odd
tory. A very unusual Torah which undoubtedly will take its place among the famous and unique Scrolls, h;.s just 'been completed in New York.
In 1942, in the midst of the most terrible catastrophe of Jewry, the then Lubavitcher Rebbe, R. Joseph Yitzchak Schneersohn, began to write a hew Scroll. He declared that it is written to welcome the long-awaited Redeemer of Israel. He wanted as many Jews as possible to have a part of it..This part they would acquire by purchasing one letter perperson for a symbolic monetary contribution of their own discretion. As the writing of the Scroll neared completion, the rabbi had it stopped for unknown reasons. He then passed away. The incomplete Torah went into the safekeeping of his successor, the famed Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersori of Lubavitch.
Suddenly, about a month ago, the Lubavitcher Rebbe made it known that he would allow the Scroll to be completed in association with the 20th Yahrtzeit of the Scroll's originator, the late Rabbi J. I. Schneersohn, This news, was received with great excitement throughout religious Jewry, and especially in Israel, As. the Rebbe again opened

Though many a mind must have gone the historical analogy of the first Sefer Torah completed by Moses, the first Jewish leader, on a Friday afternoon more than three-thousand years earlier and the event of the present Siyum (completion).
Lubavitch sources stated that it is. still possible, and indeed expected, for the many Jews that have not done so as yet, to associate themselves with this Scroll by purchasing a share for each member of their household.
Though the Scroll has already been, completed, they refer to a historical precedent, of ancient times when the Temple in Jerusalem still jstood. then every Jew has to contribute half a Ske-kel every year. With these funds , were piirchased the. communal sacr.ifices in which every Jew had a share. Every year, from the month of Nissan onwards, these : .'Sacrifices had to. be purchased from the new contributions of that year. But by tha;t date not all Shekalim had reached Jerusalein.
