QUESTION: Our daughter. 18 1/2, graduated with honors from a high school for gifted children, and was always in specicd progress cla^. She now works as a secretary.
She doesn't make friends easily, and loses them quickly. She has dated, but is very particular, and finds fault with everyone.
Our other daughter, 16, is the complete opposite. When the older one is in a bad mood, she argues with the yoimger over petty things. When we ask her—what is wrong, she cries and carries on imBeUevably. These outbursts set a very.bad example for our youngetjiaughter. ' We asked her to see a psychiatrist. She answered, "you go."'"We suggestied she join the Peace Corps or the Anny.
She wanted to go to college out-of-town, which we can afford. But we felt she should earn the money by working and saving, and pay her own way. I insist that she contribute $10 a week to the household, and that she put $20 a week in the bank.
ANSWER: Youngsters who are con-:dstent high achievers appreciate the high marks "and the rewards of recognition they get at school.
While such youngsteis have no problem being accepted in a college, they experience insecurities about admission, and even speculate that no college will want them. When they are highly critical of everyone else, at this stage, they are really indicating how critical they are of themselves. Once they are accepted by a college of their choice, these anxieties^and fears usually abate, and they begin to operate once again on their usual level.
Your daughter saw it as the ultimate ir rejection when you didn't permit her to go to an out-of-town.college, but even worse, required that she work and earn her own money for college. Since money is evidently no problem in your family, this was proof
to her that the dbllar is more irnportant to you, her parents, than she is. , Your dabster questions, all the compliments you may have given her about her ability and her looks, and she feels; they were just a cover-up for.your basic rejec-ition of her. This she expresses in temper tantrums. When she has heated discussions her younger sister and you ask her what is wrpng.'the implication is that something is wn'ong vrith her. She sees it as imik>sition and pun^ment to have to contribute $10 a week toward the household, when the money is not needed.
With'this image of herself, which she gets from your treatment of her, she is naturally fearful about wfhether she vrill be acceptable on the outside. She drops the . boys and even her girlfriends, after a short while, only to forestall the rejection which she feels vrill inevitably come to her.
Your suggestion that she join the Peace Corps or the Army represents to her not an Opportunity for service in a worthy cause, but an expulsion from her home. It implies that you want to get rid of her, and get her as far away from you as possible.
This conflicted attitude also confuses her emotionally. On the one hand, you treat her like a child who still needs to be supervised and controlled by her parents, and on the other hand, you tell her to go off and be completely on her own.
She tells you to go for help. She wants you as her parents, to take on some responsibility for having caused or contributed to her problems. Going for some counseling yourselves would then make it easier for her to admit that she, too, could benefit from some insights into her attitudes and behavior.
Perhaps the first step in this direction should be an offer to your daughter to go to a college of her choice, with your support. Such an expression of faith in her would better her judgment of herself, and also her behavior. The atmosphere in the' home would change, too. ,

Very often I am amused by what 1 hear and.read. What tickles rr>e is the choice of words rather than what.the sentences convey.
When one refers to something as "the King's English", the thought of slang and colloquialism immediately comes to mind. Conversely, the opposite is also true.
Dr. Sigmund Freud would have had quite a balj diagnosing, for Instance, the guy who insists on always spouting forth,Sunday words. Not. God forbid, that I have any objections to such' usage per se! After all it did cost my pop a pretty fortune for me to acquire my BA. The least I could do is to repay him by sounding e little bit learned.
In elementary English, one of the first rules taught is: "The simpler the sentence, the more comprehensible'and beautiful." '
My professor continued that, if we wished to be understood by all, it must be remembered that the masses are plain people and one should speak accordingly. It's not the sixty-four-dollar word that counts;.rather,-it's the grammatical structure or lack of it which is most revealing. And if one can colour phrases by interjecting occasionally a foreign term, stTmuch the better.

NU, God knovys 1 try. By me, a letter is a letter unless I want to be funny.
There's an "oldie" which has recently been revived. It's a good song in it's original state. But think of the impact the composer would have made were he to have written,
"I'm gonna sit write down and write myself an epistle.
And make believe it comes from you ..." Hilarious!

Can you conjure up in mind the fellow who says-in a simple statement, I presume-"olefactory sense" rather than "smell" and "putrescense" in place of "stink"? They're dillies!
How about the guy who says "... disinterred from the caverns of limbo..."?
For a good laugh, that tops everything. Wonder if he's sour and
hen-pecked. Maybe he has no other way of letting loose.
