Irving Stone, the Jew who l>ecame the most prestigious biographer in the nation, believes firmly that thelwokis the last bastion of freedom after writing 25 of them. He gave credit to his wife, Jean, in dedicating his newest book, "The Passions of the Mind", a biography of Sigmund Freud, to her as his editor in residence. Stone revealed in Cincinnati that he spent six years including the conception, research, and study in residence in Vienna to pro-
duce the iKXdc. He and his wife projected themselves into the life and times of the psychiatrist Doing that with many of the persons whose lives he has written al)out is like having many lives such as those of Clarence Darrow, Vihpent van gogh, and now Freud.

"It started many years ago, down in Egypt land.
You forced me into slavery; you tied up my two hands.
You threw my children in the river, worked me to the bone.
But in the end you heartless world, the strength of God was shown.
I'm a Jew and I'm proud to be,
And if I'm going to hell world, you're coming down with me."
This first stanza of a rock ballad which gives Jewish agonized history served up in mod style has been retorded, privately financed by Miami Beach's Temple Menorah Rabbi Mayer Abramowitz. (Conservative). The melodic, though searing piece, was composed by 17-year-old David Abramowitz, longhaired guitar strumming son of the rabbi, who sings and accompanies himself on the record. The song is burning up Miami Youth groups with its beat and message. "I

The "New Version" said Stravinsky, "was just my correcting old mistakes."

CAMPSHOMRIA
The most crucial ingredient contributing to the development ofahumanbeing's character is the variety of experiences he undergoes through the stages from childhood to adulthood with extra emphasis on the ex-, periences of childhood.
For the most part, children who go to Canadian summer camps, spend the precious summer months in an environment that is as much as possible an extension of the home. Such camps, rather than encouraging the independence of the child, and increasing the dimension of his understanding, tend to render him dependent, and subsequently unimaginative, uncreative and unindividual-istic.
On the contrary, a camp tliat strives towards offering a different reality to a child, that is, a reality different from that of the home, succeeds in creating the very impluses which other camps fail to generate. The.child learns suffering as well as joy, fulfillment, compassion, communication ana other human values.
Camp Shomria is such a camp — with stress on education towards a kibbutz way of life. A'summer spent at Camp Shomria means an encounter with values and a life' style not ordinarily experienced throughout the year in Canada: a lifestyle of complete sharing, cooperation, the Jewish heritage, scouting, and an exchange of thought.

THE ISRAELIS. By Harry : Golden. G. P. Putnam's Sons. 318 pp.; ISRAELIS AND JEWS. By Simon N. Herman. Random House. 321 pp.; THE MIDDLE EAST REVOLUTION. By Humphrey Trevelyan. Gambit, 275 k>.-
Here are three documents touching Neither directly or tangentlally on Israel and the Middle East conflict The essays by Golden and Herman focus primarily on the Israeli persohality while former aml)assadorTrevelyan's memoirs deal with the political vicissitudes in Egypt, Ira<i and Aden.
The books which deal directly with Israel provide some fascinating insights not only into the character of Israeli society, but the craft of writing as weU. Harry Golden, whom American literary mandarins love to pillory as the quintessence of shmaltz, has produced a far more accurate portrait of the Israeli in his whimsical approach than S. N. Herman has with his scientific investigations, replete as they are with all manner of professional charts, graphs and questionnaires.
The problem is that Israel's elusive and volatile personality as a state and as a nation is not amenatdeto the kind of sociological analysis which the learned Hebrew University professor has utilized to explore the subject
Herman's study is marred, moreover, by an inept ordering ofhis materials. The major portion of this work contains responses to various questionnaires put to Israeli students. The results of that inquiry are represented with slight interpretive comments that are needlessly repete-tive. In the final portion the author does manage to use
genuine prose (instead ofhis habitual sociological code) to sum up his conclusions; one of which is the observation that religiously-oriented Israelis tend to be more loyal and sensitive to Israel as the homeland forthe Jewish pec^Iei.
Had the author reversed his format and left his data to the end his book would have been far niore iattrac-tive.
Harry Golden's popular approach to Israel is not only attractive reading but on occasion provides intelligent and pithy observations atwiit the qualities and defects of Israeli life.
The author of ONLY IN AMERICA has the requisite_ tact and skill to point up some of the most annoying defects in Israel without pro-\okiDg ardent Zionists to go for his jugular. This critical aspect of Golden's essay is seen particularly well in his indictment of Israel's time honored institution of influence peddling — the ubiquitous ■protektsia". "A Rumanian, for example,'' ot>-serves Golden wryly, "is the director of the Israeli lottery, the profits of which go to schools and hospitals. Of the 3,000 personnel who administer the lottery, 2,500 are Rumanians."
That is the kind of irreverent but ^ntle tone which characterizes what Golden has to say about Israel's religious kibixitzim, its drinking mores (or lack thereoO or gastronomic delights (nonexistent). What kind of country can Israel be, queries Golden, when you cant find a water fountain in a Tel Aviv park? Golden's barbs reach many sectors on the spectrum of Israeli life, including the politicaL There he is quite naturaUy supportive of Israel's desire to live in
opposition to the Arabs view that Israel must die.
On this latter issue Humphrey Trevelyan, British am-l)assador to Egypt during 1955-1956, would probably not share Golden's optic. That is not surprising since he is the man who csdls Nasserfs murderous encirclement of Israel in 1967, the blocking of the Tiran Straits, and the despatching of100,000 troot>s in Sinai —"some provocation".
Trevelyan, in his infurr-iating British habit of understatement reminds me of those people who are*wohtto
describe the Second World War as "thatunpleasantness between 1939-1945". Given his predilection for insipid speech, Humphrey's MIDDLE EAST, IN REVOLUTION, turns out to be a father dull tale about events that inpst observers found rather exciting. After all, the Sinai campaign of 1956 and the bloody coup in Iraq in 1958 were not exactly pastoral promenades. Reading about them through this writer gives one the impression that history consists of nothing more than exchanging diplomatic notes.

PRAYERS BANNED IN APARTMENT
Jerusalem, (JCNS). - A congregation praying in a private apartment was likely to disturb the rest of the residents — particularly on the Sabl)ath which for most people was their one day off work, said a Tel Aviv magistrate. He made an order
forbidding the use of a private apartment as a synagogue.
The magistrate, Mr. Zeav Lotan, said that regular organized prayer was not the normal way of life of an Israeli, as it was for a Jew in an observant community.
