Beth , Sholom Brotherhood's 22nd annual humanitarian award has been presented to the people of Sweden for their part in rescuing 7,500 Jews trapped in occupied Denmark during World War II.
Brotherhood president Donald Latchman presented Ake Malmaeus, Swedish ambassador to Canada, with the award last Tuesday, "for the courage, gallantry and nobility of youf great people - the people of Sweden - in giving sanctuary to Danish Jews during World War H."
In a speech following the presentation, Malmaeus outlined Sweden's role in the rescue operations which, he said, took place "right under the eyes of the Gestapo."
In August of 1943, Danish Jews were marked for extermination by the Nazis despite protests and threats of repercussions voiced by the governments of occupied Denmark and neutral Sweden.
■ Malmaeus told the dinner audience of 650 persons that when it became apparent what the fate of Jews in Denmark would be, the people of Sweden and Denmark organized an underground railroad and ferried Jews to safety across narrow straits sep-

8. Above all - when you have had it - quit! This is
not a race nor an endurance test. Walk as far as you can - because whatever you raise will be a help to Soviet Jewry. If you decide.not to finish, try to leave at a checkpoint so your passport will be validated right up to the point at which you quit.
9. Please - don't be a llt-terbug .Litter baskets will be located at all checkpoints. Deposit litter there - not along the route.

arating the two countries.
Malmaeus said this "clandestine traffic" of refugees was responsible in one day alone for saving 1,000 lives.
Although Sweden was all but surrounded by the Nazi menace when the 1943 rescues took place, the ambassador said much of the credit should go to the people of Denmark "who at the risk of their lives, with daring and skill, carried out this escape into Sweden."
In 1963 the Beth Sholom Brotherhood rewarded the Danes with their 13th annual humanitarian award for their part in the evacuations.
Among those present at the award dinner were Ontario Lieutenant - Governor W. Ross Macdonald, Executive Alderman David Rotenberg, York Mayor Phil White and Abraham Lieff, Ontario Supreme court justice.

The Mercedes-Benz 350SL.
A sports car for all seasohs
With its removable coupe roof and soft roadster top you can live with the Mercedes-Benz 350SL all through the year:
It is neither loud nor cramped. Interior appointments and driving comfort equal those of a Mercedes-Benz sedan. In point of fact, the 350SL has more forward leg room! The doors even include ductwork that routes warming or cooling air up the side windows.!
Yet for all its attention to comfort, the 350SL is a most respectable performer." Four disc brakes (ventilated in front), fully independent suspension and an overhead-cam fuel-injected V-S are a few of its impressive credentials.
r".-- '' ' \
If you're looking for performance and year round comfort, we invite you to test drive this most civilized sports car. And when you do, we believe you'll want to make this the year you will finally own a Mercedes -Benz. ■
