By MIRIAM HERMAN TORONTO-
From the inner sahctum of executive office, sjuites, where she heads up the 25-inember Toronto Board of Educationjjlildy Jprdaii modestly confesses to^ still being slightly amazed that an "in-her-40's Jewish-jna-tron" should have become chairman of thejbpard.
Actually, the fact that she is a woman, and Jewish to boot, has evinced little more from her colleagues than the usual good-humored jokes about being a Jewish mother and '•Where's the chicken soup?"
Apparently, most of the flak comes from the fact that she resides in and represents one of Toronto's more affluent areas (Ward 11). "The 'comfortable people' who live north of Bloor St. are suspect of not being in tune with inner city needs."she said.
Mrs. Jordan's appointment as chairman did not come about in a vacuum. She had served as vice-chairman last year. But she finds that being chairman is practically a full-time job, with a schedule that leaves one breathless just to hear about it.
There are a staggering number of meetings and public functions to attend. There are budgets, curriculums, and personnel problems to consider, and reports to write. And wedged somewhere in between there must be time for household, wardrobe and. yes, the hairdresser's. However, Mrs. Jordan
Judy Jordan
appears to be able to meet the whirlwind of activities with equanimity.
Her interest in education dates back many years to her home and school involvement. It paralleled that of her late husband Dr. David Jordan, a pediatrician, who was a Forest Hill trustee for six years.
The decision to become a candidate herself, following her husband's death, was made during the second term as president of the'Toronto Council of Home and School.
For a gal who admits that she is not a politician (she is not even a card-carrying member of a political party), and has no political ambitions beyond the field of education, she shows an unexpected enthusiasm for election campaigning.
Her two children, Mark, 19, a second year Univei'sity of Toronto student, and Gail. 17, who attends Forest Hill Collegiate, are all tor mother's career; even

though it can occasionally mean a Sunday evening.' 'good night-ril see you on Fri-. day! ".They were in on both .the original decision to enter the race four;yearsjago, and the recent one to accept the chairmanship.-—:
One of Mrs. Jordan's over-riding— cpncerns as chairman is the-return_pf autonomy of- the individual school boards, piarticularly since new provincial ceilings have been placed on the education dollar.
"There is a redundancy of levels of control which means that not only the trustees but the administrators as well are doing double duty," she said. "We should be given the money and be allowed to make our own decisions. "
Do womanly attributes give her (and the four other female members of the board) any special insight into the needs of children?
Mrs. Jordan said shie didn't think so. but added that ."being a parent and having children in the school system is extremely important. That is one way of getting feed-back and an understanding of where the needs are."
