Markswoman wins five medals
Confd from Page 1
metre free-style relay. Greg Vanular, 18. of Pickering, Ont., won a silver in the-100 metre backstroke, finishing 1 1/2 seconds behind the winner. His time, was one minute and four seconds.
Elaine Luxembourg, only 13, of Montreal, made the -finals. She has only been swimming about three years. Bob. Luxembourg, Elaine's Drother, and Peter Veseoli, both 15, have a good.chance of making the Olympic team in '76, if they both continue to improve as they have.
Most of the swimmers swim five or six days a week, twice a day for a total of three hours a day. In Dave Wilson's opinion, this dedication is necessary to at least reach national calibre.
All three Canadian wrestlers won medals. Len Gang, a student of University of Toronto, won two silver medals; one in Graeco-Ro-
man, the other infree-style. Howard Stupp, 18, of Mont-realy won asilverinGraeco-Roinan and a bronze in freestyle. Btuce Girvitz, of Calgary, also 18, won a bronze in each event.
Gang lived in Israel two years ago on a {Cibbutz near the Lebanese border. He hopes to compete this April in the Canadian Championships and in three years at the Olympics inthe 115 pound class. In his second year at the University of Toronto he is going for a B.A. in Jewish Studies. He trains for wrestling five times a week for 10 months of the year and as one of the hardest^ training athletes at the Games, he arrived at his present level on his own, without the benefits of a coach.
Canada also captured medals in tennis and golf. Abby Hoffman, veteran international track star, who was favorite to win a gold.
did not go to Israel on account of a foot injury.
For the first time Canada finally finished the Games with a bronze in basketball. "Coached by Ruby Ricbman, the team put forth aitremen-doug effort in beating Argentina for the bronze. If this team could'only play together for the next four years, a gold medal in 1977 would not be outside the —-realm of probability.
Terry Farnsworth of Montreal, the flag-carrier for the Canadians, won two silver medals in judo. Morris Ostriewzki of Toronto, surprised everyone by winning a silver medal.
Mortie Stolzman recently returned from the ninth Miic-cabiah Games where be captured a bronze in the heavyweight weight lifting.
