Demminalization of marijuana urged by B^nai B'rith policy body
TORONTO -
B'rialB'rith board of governors has called for "a complete airing" ofthe Watergate scandal, "decriihina-lization"^f marijuana laws and strengthened U.S. standards in the expenditure of revenue sharing funds appropriated for social welfare programs.
The 78 member board, highest B'nai B'rith policy body, also urged UN intervention to halt "government-inspired" harassment ofSy-rian and Iraqi Jews and international treaties with enforceable sanctions against nations "that encourage or give asylum" to Arab terrorists.
In another action, at its
mid-year meeting here, the board condemned the' 'hoodlum-like a:ttacks" of Soviet security officers on Israeli athletes and Jeiyish spectators at the World University Games in Moscow. The board*? resolution called on the International Olympic Committee to reject the Soviet Union's bid to host the 1980 Olympic Games.
The B'nai B'rith statement on Watergate said that "a complete airing of the politically motivated crimes ... and massive abuse of power from which these arose" was needed to reaffirm individual rights and liberties "inherent in the American political process."
The process, as well as the "treasured right of privacy" had been compromised by widespread electronic sur-. veiliance and other forms of illegal spying in the 1972 election campaign, the governors declared.
Declaring that the Watergate crimes have '-^seriously damaged the federal government's ability to function" in vital national matters, their statement urged that Congress and the courts pursue "full and fair investigations" to reach "the complete truth."
The board was closely divided on the marijuana resolution in which only 37 of its

How does acupuncture fit in with Jewish law? Michael Klopot, 25, suffering the acrid pain of migraines, decided to consult rabbis to see if there was anything in the Halacha to impede his experiment.'
"Having a migraine is like having your head in a vise,", Klopot graphically described, "and if you move it, it's like hitting the sides of your head."
Klopot, who Hves in Toronto and works as an expi-diter for a large aluminum firm, returned to his home town for a brief visit and an appointment with a well-known acupuncturist.
Without turning to special research. Rabbi Bernard Bloomstone, spiritual leader of the Temple Emanu-El, and Rabbi Chaim Denburg of the Shomrim Laborker, reported that they could rein ember no discussion of acupuncture in Jewish law.
"To my knowledge there is nothing written, "affirmed Rabbi Denburg, who said he recalled certain discussions in the Commentaries on the Chinese, "biit of course," he added, "you can't tamper with a corpse." .
Secure with the knowledge that acupuncture is not forbidden in Jewish law, Klopot felt reassured that perhaps there might be an end after all to his headache. "First thie doctor asked me to point out thei areas on my own head,, which he then drew oh an outline of acu-punture points on a diagram of the skull. He pushed long thin a 1 uminum needles through the, skin around my headv AUit felt like were little pinpricks."
Klopot explained that the doctor put a needle through the skin on his thumb, and attached a wire from a "meter" machine to the thumb

needles were removed and Klopot left the examining room. Later that evening he commented that the areas where the doctor worked was less intense with headache pain.
"There's a fellow I work with," he said, "who told me that he has never had a headache in his life.
"You know, he's one person I envy," he stated as he left the medical building.
55 American members cast votes. . V : '
The resolution, calling on federal and istate governments to decrimihalize possession of marijuana for personal use, carried by a one-vote margin, 19 - 18.
It decried criminal penalties against use of the drugs as "totally unrealistic," contending "there is very little evidence that continued use of marijuana - unlike many legalized drugs - is capable of building a significant tolerance in an individual." There is "absolutely no evidence," the resolution contended, "to support the view that its use will lead to a dependence on opiates."
In a policy statement on revenue sharing, the B'nai B'rith leaders charged that much of the federal funds paid to the states "has been unwisely spent, not for social services or assistance, but for public buildings, police uniforms and equipment, and the like and, in some cases, to reduce local taxes."
The B'nai B'rith board appealed to UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim to "intercede immediately" on behalf of the Syrian and Iraqi Jewish communities, "whose religious, cultural and ethnic identity is being systematically destroyed."
Since last September, the board noted, 24 Iraqi Jews have been murdered in officially condoned attacks and many more of the diminished community's 500 Jews have been subjected to arbitrary arrest.
