Self-taught craftsmen show much in common
art
By PAULA DAVID
One of the bonuses of haunting art galleries and meeting, various artists, is occasionally coming into contact witli fresh niew.talent. This week, two Canadian craftsmen have come to my attention - Aryeh StoUman of Windsor. Ont., and Martin Myers of Toronto. Although they work in totally different media, the two young men have much in com -mon. Both are primarily self-taught and working in an experimental vein that shows continual development. While both work as craftsmen in their spare time, it takes more devotion and hours than the average hobby.
Aryeh Stollman creates delightfully lyrical copper wire sculptures. A series of wire Chasidim celebrating the various festivals, is complete down to the detail work in the shtraymel, caftan, shofar, Torah and other symbols. Wrought from a continuous piece of wire up to 20 feet long, this series of sculptures shows a genuine feel for the media as well as the exuberant subject matter. Stollman has shown his Chasidim in the
WIZO Shop in Jerusalem; as
well as the Windsor Art Gallery.
In a quieter and slightly more sophisticated tone, Martin Myers' weaving reflects a thorough exploration of this recently revived craft. In a series of shoulder, bags, he has explored the spectrum as well as various wools, cottons and hemp. The experimental potential of a deceptively simple bag is fascinating, for the finished products often contain weaves ranging through plain, twill, sumack and hand knotting.
Myers' color sense is seen on a larger scale in his wall hangings and rugs. He prefers earth colors and natural hues, but an occasional perfectly timed introduction of bright color always keeps
the fabric from becoming mundane.
While neither craftsman is involved or interested in a full-time commercial endeavor, they are both able to support their work by marketing the results. Stoll-man's sculpture is ofaman-ageable size and price, and is very appealing for its decorative purposes. The. shoulder bags and rugs by Myers are not only practical and durable, but aesthetically pleasing as well. They are available at Me and My Friends Gallery aiid the wire sculpture may be obtained from the Negev Book Store. It is hoped that the patrons of the craft revival continue to show the interest and encouragement to stimulate the quality found in the work of Myers and Stollman.

A STATEMENT BY THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION
OF CANADA
Since its first Convention in 1910 the Zionist Organization of Canada has consistently maintained in its Constitution that a contributor to the fund raising arms of the Jevyish Agency is automatically a member of the Zionist Organization of Canada.
This proviso in the Constitution has afforded the members and officers of the Zionist Organization of Canada the opportunity to devote much of their efforts to the urgent needs of fund raising. Everywhere the Zionist Organization of Canada was in the forefront of Zionist and Israeli activities; its members in most communities were the "work horses" on behalf of Israel. This was possible because the Zionist Organization of Canada had and continues to have no political link or party line to follow. What vvas "good for Israel" became the program of the Zionist Organization of Canada. The result was that the vast majority of Canadian Zionists identified with it in this loose but dedicated manner. This arrangement was backed by an agreement with the Jewish Agency that a smsill percen^ge of the funds collected be retained for the maintenance of the fund raising machir^ery as well as the ongoing programs of the Zionist Organization of Canada.
Since the Zionist Organization of Canada was solely involved as. a fund raising arm of the Jewish Agency, unlike Hadassah and the Zionist parties, the Zionist Organization of Canada had no projects or campaigns of its own and there thus vvas never any tangible organizational name plates to designate its fund raising efforts on behalf of Israel.
With the changes that have taken place in recent years including the^estabiishment of an independent United Israel Appeal in Can'ada aiid the creation of a Zionist Federation — the Zionist Organization of Canada now feels itself free to engage in more specific programs in Canada and in Israel.
As a consequence of the above-noted changes the Zionist Organization of Canada has established the Zionist Organization of Canada Charitable Fund Inc. with authority to raise funds for the support of camps, libraries^ projects, etc. Donation to ts various undertakings may be made either in Israeli Bonds or cash and tax deductible receipts will be issued.
The major activities of the Zionist Organization of Canada wil now be centered mainly around the following areas:
a) Young Judaea — the Youth Movement of the Zionist Organization of Canada operating in 29 centres across Canada.
b) Promotion and maintenance of its 10 Summer Camps in Canada and in Israel.
c) The T.V. program "SHALOM" produced by the Zionist Organization of Canada during the past two years anc shown over 27 cable networks in Canada; also the T.V program "JEWISH DIMENSIONS" produced and telecast by the Zionist Organization of Canada in Montreal.
d) Tours to Israel.
e) The Zionist Book Club.
f) The launching of a campaign for $1,000,000.00 to finance the continuation of the foregoing activities and the construction of a Zionist Youth Centre in Israel in the Jerusalem Forest.
Starting July 1st, 1974 about TOO Young Judaean teenagers will spend the summer months in this centre for an incomparable summer experience. During the balance of the year students from Canada studying at various educational institutions in Israel will be accommodated in the Youth Centre. In addition a permanent Zionist Organization of Canada office will be established in Israel.
We do and will continue to devote our efforts to the urgent need of fund raising on behalf of the United Israel Appeal of Canada Inc. ^
We do and vvill continue to function within the Canadian Zionist Fedei'ation and co-operate in all areas of its activities.
Recently, the Jewish Agency allocations to Zionist movements have been reduced and the trend is to eventually eliminate them. Theenvisagedalternative being— with the blessing of the Jewish Agency — that the Zionist Movements raise their own funds for their own needs, as is the case in all other countries of the Diaspora. This applies not only to the Zionist Organization of Canada but to the Zionist Parties and the Canadian Zionist Federation as well. — .
Canadian Zionists are invited to jiarticipate in our Campaign for local needs and in this exciting Youth Project which will become one of the major attractions in the Jerusalem area. For the Zionist Organization of Canada it is the long-awaited opportunity to create its own identifiable presence in Israel. It involves your own children. We urge you to support it.
