Phil Granovsky, president of the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto, has urged that all efforts onJ)ehalf of Unauthorized Israef cani-: paigns be discontinued. : , -_J.'It IS only in this waytha4-we can avoid the constant demands made upon mem-_ bers . of our community for contributions to an increasing multiplicity of cam-:
paigns," he told The Canadian Jewish News.
Acting in accordance with The Committee on Authorization of. Campaigns of the Jewish Agency m Jerusalem, the UJWF asks thecoma, munity to exercise 'a substantial element of control _:by refusing to suppwTthose campaigns that do not haye authorization." . :-. .
Granovsky said the Jeru-

HAMILTON -
. He had never had any secret longing, to become another Toscanini and he wasn't even- an armchair conductor. All he wanted was to go down in.history as the only scrap dealer to conduct the' Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.
And then he got the flu.!
Chester Waxman, general manager and secretary of I Waxman & Sons, member of the board of Adas Israel synagogue and of the Hamil--ton Hebrew Academy, a past president of the Council .of. Jewish Grganizations,:memr ber of B'nai B:rith, a pillar of Hamilton's Jewish com-munitv, thought it would be a fun thing to do— as well as benefit the orchestra with some much needed cash:
He had been the mvstery man who had had an agent bid on his behalf at the Bach-a-Nal, a super-auction, organized bv the HPO women's committee a few months ago, and paid S2,500 for the
privilege of wielding the baton for 20 minutes.
The night before the concert, entitled A Night in Old Vienna, - he finaUv revealed his identity--- and.the fact that instead of a baton there, would be a thermometer in his hand.
Buteven if a trifle disap-' pointed, Waxman was cheerful about it all. After aM.. there would still be a Wax-man, on the podium. He put the names ol his three sons and one daughter into a hat, shook them around — and 17-year-old. grade 12 stu-
dent Gary drew the winning
lot: .
And after this, who knows.. There may yet be a Waxman up there among the Toscan-inis. et al.
