OTTAWA-
About 250 persons assembled across the street from the Soviet, embassy here Sunday to protest the imprisonment of 'Sylva Zalmanson and to demand she and all Jews who wish to leave the Soviet Union be permitted to do so.
The protesters, many carrying placards reading '•Free Sylva Zalmanson" and .'-Let My People Go" came from Montreal and Toronto as well as Ottawa.
Two busloads of protesters coming from Toronto braved a storm of snow and freezing ram, which caused cancellation of plane flights overnight, in order to participate in the rally.
The protesters were told' that Sylva - Zalmonson, 29, who has served nearly four .years of a 10-year prison sentence for allegedly conspiring to hijack a plane out of Russia, is suffering from a bleeding ulcer, a severe case of tuberculosis.-failing eyesight and hearing, and severe vitamin deficiency due to the poor diet provided in the Potma prison campand inadequate medical treatment.
"The diet is all starch," Genya Intrator, chairman of the National Women for Soviet Jewry, a Toronto-based group, said. "Theje are no vitamins in it at all. If something is not done soon to help. her,. Sylva Zalmanson will not survive;"; ■
To illustrate their point, protest leaders prepared "a typical meal" served in the camp: It consisted of a wat-
ery cabbage soup, black bread, a small piece of dried fish and a slice of potato.
kabbi Benjamin Fried-, berg, spiritual leader of Congregation Aguciath Israel in Ottawa, and chairnian of the Ottawa Committee for Soviet Jewry, referred to the Soviet l/nion's treatment of Sylva Zalmanson as ''iamur- . der by the state murder by deprivation.".
J. B, Salsberg, chairman of . the steering committee on . Soviet Jewry of the Canadia;n Jewish Congress, called the Soviet Union's attitude "a violation of international human rights."
The National Women for Soviet Jewry brought a small package of vitamins and
medicines which they claimed was crucial to the survival of Miss Zalmanson and tried to present it to the Soviet embassy. -
: A member of the group, followed by a small band of reporteris, rang the bell at the embassy gate; The crowd. watched, silently in the rain for someone to open the embassy .door. People peeked out of windows in the. embassy, but the door remained closed, then amid shouts of "open lip the Iron .Door," the package ;was left by the. .-gate.
. After most of the demonstrators had left, a detective from the city, police department took the package of drugs away from the gate and placed it on the: sidewalk.
