Organizations and People
in my view
By CHARLES LAZARUS
MONTREAL -
There was something about the Canadian Jewish Congress' Eastern Region conference that was most. dis-turbingj-- more so than at other simi-
—lar gatherings, and 1 have been trying to sort out what it was that made me so uncomfortable.
There was a' sense of amchah, or peoplehood; a surprising number we're
- early arrivals despite a snow storm and streets like skating rinks, pro-: vidingassurance and comfort that Jews well know for whom the bell tolls.
At the same time, what appears to have bothered me most was the atr mosphere and programing of the conference which reminded me.of oneof those CBG panel shows.
The same faces in the same places, year after year; offering the same pieties and platitutdes about the rules of water safety and not standing up in the boat; and failing to realizethatthis was ;a new ball game, in this year ol .1974, with new attitudes and strategy required to fight the battle of recognition and Jewish self-respect.
Mostly, it seems what kept naggings at me was the failure of CJC leaders, both professional and non-professional, to understand that between the extremities of the aging establishment and the non-aging teenagers, there has already developed a cadre of intelligent younger people say, between the late 20s and early 40s, with a superb understanding of the dynamics of individual, community and government interaction, and a deep respect for the
open society. ' ^
As 1 have written before, there seems to ha ve developed within the Montreal - -and Canadian, for that matter—Jewish community a< revulsion for the kind of elitism and secretism.'in which only opecial people at very special levels have been privy to deciding what is gooc for the Jewish constituency. And making deals which violated.thebasic principles of what Woodrow-Wilson described as. the~~ir9portance in~a democracy of ;llcovenants . openly arrived at . . ."
That-was way back in 1918,andtoday-in 1974, this habit "of covenants not openly arrived can well be spelled Watergate.
- Yes Watergate; one, giant, awesome Watergate, where the chosen people are those who chose themselves to decide the fate of the community, and cynically, deigning to inform not only the multitude, but even their representatives in the executive bodies. People are thus frequently unaware of what has been happening until a stunned conference is told of one chairman's personal solution, to a jurisdictional confrontation --- his executive, was never consulted -- or emotion-charged . delegates, almost too late, try to set a course different-from what the Water-gaters decided. I'm exaggerating?
Perhaps, but only because the organized Jewish community has been the hostage in a dangerous game played by persons, who have yet failed to understand the realities of 1974:
This is the age of the open society; . this is the age of synthesis, when younger leaders can build on the solid foundation of the past; this is the age of emeritus in-which those who have done their job, must now step back— not away -- and accept due koved.

A very special Passover service

Helen is mother and lights the "Passover candles, i,. . Harvey is father and says kiddush.
The "Passover service of the Kadima school fpr retarded- children begins -so simply and yet it is a triumph. Each brocha, each small comprehension of rit-. ual, is the fulfilment of par-ental.dreams that these children shall not be denied a place in the Jewish community.
Last Sunday morning, the Kadima School had, as their
seder guests, 25 Jewish visitors from the Orillia Hospital, ranging in age from five years to the middle 40s. They gathered-first^ in the chapel "~of the Beth-Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue^here their 22 young hosts, the regulars of theJCadima-Sunday School, helped them to participate in the, simple, meaningful service.
Following a program of films, songs .and dances in the recreation hall, the group gathered in" a dining room : for the seder. Members of -Don Mills Chapter,, B'nai B'rith, had prepared a seder, plate for each child ~ cha-
roses, horse radish, celery and hard-boiled egg, served with a cup of loganberry juice. Matzo and a cup of salt wajer completed the "table.. The haggadahs had been specially written and: mimeographed. -^r_
The children joined in the brochas~and the Mah Nish-tanah, grimaced as they tast-edTfie marror, and then sang Dianu with enthusiasm.
Each participated to the level of his capacity, but to each, this was an experience. There was Helen, sitting proudly at the head table being "Ima", the mother. Helen has . learned;respon-
