Fresh, talented cast sparkle in topical revue
By LYNN SLOTKIN
Besides having quite an awesome title, the revue What's A Nice Country Like You Doing In A State Like This? now at the Dell; has a fresh, talented cast, a funny topical script, a . hum in able
■ score, ami wittv lyrics.-The songs, situations
"and . jokes concern the state of: being with the. country to the. south: hence a round al)out way oi explaining the title. . ■ As is the case with, many revues and plays that- try to be purelv nar tionalistic,^ the inaterjal unintentionally becomes applicable to other.,
places:, the revue, play etC; then becomes universal. Songs reflecting sexual moresi relationships and trends such as, Street Suite, Male Chauvinist Pig, Come On; Daisy, and Porcupine Suite, can be applied to almost anyw4iere::not just the United States. But -^Dng_s and skits dealing with crime such as .A Mugger's Work is Never Done; and political ac-tivitv.- as in Halderman Und Ehrlichman U n d Klein, and Watergate Waltz and Whatever Happened To The Communist R^arty- could onlv reflect what is happening in the U S
..In any case, if the in-
tention of the song is to jab at a subject, then Ira Gasman's lyrics do it with a ■ vengence; the jab is sharp, sometimes: biting, with enough room left over for humor. In such, cases Gary Hoff-: man's . music is sombre or jarring. But when the •message" is ; gentle, friendly.; so are the lyrics and music. ■ ■ Miriam Fond's dir^^ tion. is energetic, but jt never detracts from the .song' or skit. She has a . ■talented cast to work with . and of course, that always helps.
■Andrea Martin, Martin Short; Claude Tessierand Richard Whelan supply the right amount of pixy.
impish grins and fresh, scribbed looks. . while . Trudy Desmond adds a generous helping of Classy sophistKatiDirr-Andrea Martin is quite funny in the I'm:In Love With --.songs and she does, a terrific huffy . Puerto Ricanimpersonation. ; . ,. _
Martin Short isa.spec-lahst in being. awkward._ asm the Communist"^ Menace; number: Claude Tessier is the-best dan-: cer and does a nice rendition of Daniel Boone-: Richard Whelan is a hu- . morons Richard .Nixon, never sinister, anda lot of the humor of the evening IS the result of his performance —Whelan's
that IS, Nixon does his own act someplace else. Trudy Desmond has the l)est voice; she is the
-baiter of the group. Her singing of I like Me is powerful; while that of Fill'Er . Up is marvelv
. louslv coy. ;— . .
The show starts with a l)it~. of reverse psy- 7 cholog.y with the song, It's A_ Typically, Topical Revue, explaining the show is like evei?y other revue and: will prdl^ably be old news by the week-;, end, so like us in spite of It. But this show IS not like every other revue, because its a notch above them; so the reverse psychology, or apology, is really unnecessary..

Report: may benefit Jewish schools
Cont'd from Page 1
ample, if requested.
He would then mail, his cheque to thecentralbur-. ■ eau; which would add any subsidy required and send the total amount on to the . school(s); One interesting side effect ol the recommended system might be an end to the parent-run tuition committees presently operating at several schools, which put . the parent volunteers an the. position of assessing the financial position of .other parents. Tile new systeni might even mean that.- the schools : would never know who was paying the full fee and'.who wasn't..
However.: a high income parent with several childi^en in Jewish schools inight eiid up pay -ing fbrhis privacy. Someone in the 350.000 bracket' could not request a tuition reduction until the total fainily fees .reached approximately .S:l,.'iGO.
For the W'elfare, Fund.; the adoption of. the.' rec-
ommendations would mean an acceptance, of. responsibilitv to'help the parents of -any. ■ Jewish school —day or supple-, mentarv. Orthodox. Conservative; Reform or secular --■ that. met. the basic criteria ol the recommendations.
For the community as a whole, acceptance, of the. report would mean
ran- even greater role for the. .Welfare. Fund.. in .a . sensitive area of Jewish
. life.. The financial pressures on the schools to
. conform, to the :criteria for support would be very . great. and'the:Fund would . inevitably possess much of the power that goes, with control of the purse strings-. .
.The task f\orce is aware of:thepossit)le consequences, .and. has at-
. tempted to ensure the schools' independence bv making the criteria for support financial and academic only, while allowing for a broad range of ideologies. Even the academic criteria would he administered through the Board of Jewish Education, which alreadvsu-pervises affiliated schobls.
It: may be some time before the.Welfare.Fund
. has to decid,e whether to accept the recommendations. It must wait-until the Study Gommittee has submitted its final report, which will incorporate the work of six task forces. The committee, which was expected to wind up its work nine nionths ago, is still editing task force reports. Shoshana Kurtz, a staff
member of > the Study ; Committee, acknowledged the authenticitvof the draft obtained bv the CJN. but • refused to predict when the final ■ report would be ready.
•'Many studies are.run solely by professional people and done quickly," Mrs. Kurtz pointed out: "This one is quite different in that it has' in-vpIved .t he; pa rt icipation of lay . people who have many other respohsibil-;
ities.at every stage." . :
• She added that, because of a shortage of full-time professional staff, the workload on the lay participants has been'
.-very heavy.
In the meantime, as the cost of living moves up. so do tuition fees, teachers' salary demands and; 0pe rat ing
. costs, the bargaining on both sides of the tuition committee table is going
.to be tougher. '
From top, Trudy Desmond, Martin Short, Richard Whelan, Andrea Martin and Claude Tessier are star, ring in the revue featured at the Theatre in the Dell.
