♦A Montreal synagogue has developed a unique project to strengtheMs-
BLed by. campaign or-g|thtzer Moms Shapiro,. tHe Shaare Zedek Men's Glub-has sold over 2,000 cj^tes of Jaffa oranges, 5|)00 bottles of Carmel-vine and 500 lbs. of Elite, cfiocolates to friends, synagogue members and companies..
»"The main thing," said Shapiro, "is that we. are biilding up the Israeli: economy. If there are n|)re: exports there is nlpre employmentandIs-rSel is strengthened.-"- He satid that healthy industry i| vital.for Israel's drive t(Jward economic self-sufficiency.
tTAlthough prices of the -gtoducts :are not signifi-(gintlv cheaper than store- . bughtgoods,Shapiro said■ He project has been a:-reat success., "It gives ifeople. a lot of pride," ^explained, "to see for.
example a. crate of oranges "with Jaffa oranges •from Israel painted on it." • In the three-year history of the project, over $35,000 in profits have been donated to Israel. Shapiro, who is retired, devotes a full work day .to organizing the venture and with the help of his
wife Rose, who handles most of the paper work, writes over 2,000.letters yearly.
According to Shapiro, many orders come from outside the Jewish community. "There are a lot of French and English people we send to," he said; "even: though there
IS a service charge onout . of town orders, we have had nianv sales from places like Quebec Citv and Toronto."
The orange, chocolates and wine sale.: alternate, on a seasonal basis. The^ Jaffa orange project will. begin following the high holidays.
Last to do so, Quebec may soon establish a central registry office
By JANICE ARNOLD
MONTREALr
All records of Jewish marriages, births-' and deaths in the province of Quebec may soon be kept at one central registry if the recommendations of the Givil Code.Revision Office of Montreal are adopted.
;.At present; civil star tus registration in Quebec is the responsibility^ .of the individual synagogue or church. All other
Canadian provinces, use the central registry system. •
The changes outlined in the government-appointed office's written report will.. in no. way hinder the rabbi's abilitv to perform the marriage ceremony. Instead of sending out the certificate .himseif, the rabbi, under the new pro--. cedure. must. notify the central registry. . which will make the actual issuance.
In the .case^ of births.
and deaths, the parents and doctors involved will, respectively, have to apply to the registry.
■The Jewish community in Quebec has expressec approval of the recom-. mended changes. The Sy-nagogue> Council of Mon-. treal in consultation with .the Riabbinic; Leadership of •Montreai. the .Board of Jewish Ministers; and the Rabbinic Council, have given their support to the . plan. V
