Dubi Arie, Yom Kippur War veteran, displays his artistic symbolic interpretation of a menorah. Working mainly in oils, the painter manages to manipulate pure color compositions into heartfelt messages:

The first impression upon entering the gallery IS one of life, energy and brilliant colors. An atmosphere of vital action is created, ^and it is only upon''closer examination that the careful consider-, ation, behind - each painting becomes apparent. : An intricate network of

In my recent review of thet Collected Poems of AM. Klein, I neglected to make a proper attribution. CENTENNIAL
by James A. Michener Random House 312.50
In a recent interview, James Michener asserted that what readers liked about his novels is that they can ■'immersethemselves in a uniyerse."
Centennial'is a kind of universe *— as were Hawaii and The Spurce.
Qnce again, we are confronted with a blockbusting . tome .-- .909 pages long — that relates a complex but never-flagging story. The locale is the American West t-especially. Colorado: and the period covered extends from the actual geologic formation of the earth about four billion years ago to recent references to the plight of Richard Nixon;
It all begins when a national American magazine asks a distinguished historian to write an "in depth" analysis of the town of Centennial. Colorado, population 2;618, a place that mirrors the soul of the country "as seen in microcosm.
The historian sets to work and the uncertain -reader is soon lost in a be Wilde ring storm of
facts, dramatic events and bloody- conflicts. ■ In this massive, testimonial to "total recall" we meet . up with Indians, traders, .adventurers, explorers, gold-seekers, cowboys; charlatans; homestead-
- ers and speculators, Michener creates at least 70 important characters --- amid a cast of hundreds
— m the unfolding drama of how the West was settled, Indians massacred, and cattlemen and sheep-herders engaged in irreconcilable conflict. The bemused reader soon grows tired, of numberless cattle drives and buffalo hunts. Unwilling to miss a trick the author dwells on the Mexican Revolution; the early development of several major American cities; the
■habits of animals, pre-, historic and extant; ecology; Indian affairs; and
the shameful way that the Hispanos (Spams Am-
ericans) have t)een treated.
Running through . the pages of the book like the meandering path of the river . Platte (which. oc-cupiesan important place in the story) is Michen-er's deep and abiding love for the land hedescribes.
From time to time Centennial reads.like a research paper, not so much written as spliced togeth- , er. So many, factsl So much information!
There is little room
amid the jostling chunks of data for stylistic niceties or graceful writing but Michener presents a huge slice of history in
This book will be read with pleasure, not only by the inhabitants of Color- . ado who observe the 100th anniversary of their entry into the Union in 1976. t)ut also by multitudes of Americans on the threshold of the bicentennial observance of their independence.

very effective pieces.
It IS not often that one finds quality contemporary paintings combined with traditional Jewish content. There is no question that Dubi's work relys on a very involved commitment to Judaism, but he directs his ener-
gies onto the canvas rather than relying upon the sympathies of the viewer. This results in a personal statement executed in a-unique and colorful manner.
Dubi Ane's paintings will be at the Heritage Gallery until the end of
September, and I am sure, that we will be seeing more of his work in the months to come: His particular combination of a traditional symbolism and striking modernity has created^a style that will appeal to a large range of tastes.
