When Torontjo Pioneer Women celebrated "^y^^ ^ ^ 50th anniversary, it was a family affab*

TORONTO —
It was a family affair when the Toronto Pioneer Women's Organization celebrated their 50th anniversary at a dinner and dance last week. Almost all of the participants in the evening's program were second or third generation Pioneer Wom-eh or direct descendants of the founders.
This did not happen by design. It was a coincidence, but not at all surprising in an organization which could bring out more than 80 members of the original Club One for a triumphal march-past to a standing ovation from the more than 350 people present.
It was in 1925, in a kibbutz in the hills of Judea overlooking Jerusalem, that a young woman stood watching her kibbutz's newly-planted trees dying for lack of water. She wrote to a friend in Chicago asking if that friend might be able to. raise $500 to pay for a weir. ChJcagoans were delighted to be allowed to help and soon the young woman. Rachel Yanait — who would be the wife of the Yitzhak Ben-Zvi and First Lady of Israel had her well.
But more than a well had been begun. The idea that women in North America could help build the dream in Palestine was very appealing and clubs were formed in many cities that year, beginning with the one in Chicago. They called themselves Pioneer Women and re-
InstaUing officer Ruth Wolfish, immediate past national president of the Pioneer Women of Canada, congratulates Malka Mirsky, newIy-installed president of Pioneer Women's Toronto Council. sponded to.the needs of the pioneers in Palestine as well as resolving to further Jewish education in North America, to contribute to the enrichment of the local Jewish community, and to stress the importance of the role of women.
The first meeting of the Toronto Club, now called Club One. was held on May 25, 1925, in response to a letter which Florence Manson received from New York. In 1926, the club made its first transmission to Palestine — $635.00. In the year which
ends this month. «the organization raised $177,000.
The evening's program, entitled, "A Salute to Our Founders'* was narrated by Pearl Mekler. the daughter of a founding member. The musicians were all graindchildren of founding members — Martin Steinhouse. baritone, Joan Freeman on guitar, and Michael Freeman on Chalil. It was directed by Mimi Mekler. the granddaughter of a
founder, and the show was written and co-narrated by Louise Comblum, daughter of a founder of Chadera aub(1936).
It stressed, in prose and song, the contribution of Club One to the continuity of the organization, pointing out that its members had founded five of the succeeding 16'clubs, had sent their daughters to be first presidents of two others clubs, and had produced four daughters who had become chair-
men of Toronto Council.
High point of the evening was the installation of Malka Mirsky as Council chairman. She was installed by her mother-in-law, Sylvia Mirsky, a 1925 founding member and organizer of two succeeding clubs.
Chairman for the evening Was Esther Steinhouse. daughter of a founding member. Outgoing Council chairman is Tillie Margolis, a first generation member.
