Kosher food is provided for walkers by Lubaviteh
Thousands of people of all ages turned out for this year's walkathon to raise money for the United Jewish Appeal — Israel Special Fund.
This year the walk included "A Sense of Spadina" — a tour of old synagogues and Jewish centres of the Toronto Jewish community of the
early 1900s.
Some of the walkers who I talked to outside the Kiever Synagogue remember living on those small winding streets in the Spadina-ken^ington area. For others, like nine-year-old Greg Ma-desker and his sister Debbie. 14. the old buildings they passed are just part of history.
Ail workers, young and' old. and all volunteer workers had one common idea in mind last Sunday — to help Israel in her time of need.
The Lubaviteh Youth Organization was out in : full force providing the walkers with kosher food.
at testimonial dinner

TORONTO —
Last week at Shaarei Shpmayin) Congregation, the Jewish community feted Rabbi Dr. Israel Frankel at a testimonial dinner in his honor. About 400 guests gathered to pay tribute to Rabbi Frankel. who after serving for 19 years, has retired as director of the Jewish Public Library.
Present were many of Toronto's rabbis and their wives and the guest speakers included Dr. . Sydney Hoenig, a professor at Yeshiva University, and noted author and historiaii. Rabbi Henry Hoschander of Sharei Shomayim Congregation. Sydney Harris, president of the Canadian Jewish Congress and Rabbi Michael Celniker, who has succeeded Rabbi Frankel as library director.
Through the tireless leadership of Rabbi Frankel, the JPL has grown from a volunteer operation that possessed not so much as a Hebrew Bible, to the centre of learning it is today.
. The library now houses over 30,000 volumes that deal with every phase of humaii life from the Jewish point of view. Rabbi Frankel is fond of stressing that the purpose of a library is not j\^st to contain shelves of books, but to give guidance in whatever language the people understand.
After listening to oratory of praise for the job that he has done in his position. Rabbi Fratikel said, "this gathering is a demonstration of our devotion to Torah and our love of Jewish knowledge."
He termed the gathering a 'Simchas Torah' and stressed that it is this loyalty .and love that can best enable Jews to meet.
the great crises of survival — alienation, assimilation and intermarriage.
which had been prepared the night before the walk by over 50 people who worked until four in the morning. Rabbi Yehoshua Laufer explained that the , purpose of providing koshei* food was so that people could "walk Jewish, eat Jewish and thihk Jewish...and the attitude of the people was very .enthusiastic."
In addition to the kosher food campaign, Lubaviteh is encouraging all Jewish girls to light Sabbath candles e v e r y Friday night. At several checkpoints small candle-holders and candles were sold at nominal price.
Males over 13 were also encouraged to put on tcfillin and many were: able to do so in a travelling "tefillin-mobile."
The volunteer services by Lubaviteh and all other volunteers were undoubtedly very much appreciated by the walkers, some of whom had started as early as 7 a.m. and jogged through the entire 25-fciIometre route.

The playboy philosophy is anti-woman and women have become mere accessories in the standards set by the new morality, according to Rabbi James I. Gordon, a^ leading marriage counsellor and psychologist.
Rabbi Gordon,, of the -Young Israel of Oak-woods, Detroit. Mich, was guest speaker at the luncheon session of the annual all-day conference of the Ontario Chapter, Women's Branch VOJCA held at the Torah Emeth Synagogue. He spoke on, the "Ten Commandments Towards a Successful Marriage."
In an analysis of the new morality and its deficien-dcs. Gordon spoke on the meaning of love and explained that in triadition-al marriages, it is a most important ingredient but that new morality declares that love is not essential in sex.
"Judaism cannot accept a one-sided relationship," he said. In a totally successful marriage both
male and female experience reflected enjoyment in each others success.
It is most important for husband and wife to "know" one another and to accept a mate for the qualities he or s h e possess, he continued., •
Rabbi H. Hoscharider, Shaarei Shomaiyim Congregation, lead a session on "Interinarriage. What is the Solution?"
"There is no easy sohi-tion," said the rabbi, "but there are some safeguards." Intensive Jewish education is a top priority. Young people should never start interdating. Where there is spiritual conflict between husband and vvife the resultant confusion brings about
alienation and defection of the young.
Quoting from an article' by Milton Himmelfarb in Cmnmentaiy, Rabbi Hoschander stated that statistics on interinarriage and zero population in Israel indicate that "the. Arabs need not look for a way to reduce our numbers." Although exact statistics are not avaiiable, careful estimation shows that over 1.5 million Jews have been lost in Israel by assimila-. tion or abortion.
Another session was presented by Miriam Ziev. •vice consul of Israel, who discussed Arab propaganda.'
The Arabs are propagating a myth, she said. They have repeated in-
accuracies long enough and loud enough to believe they are true. Myth has become reality.
"Because Israel is so heavily burdened financially with defence, the government has a very meager information budget." she added.
She asked each Jew to become a goodwill ambas-
sador to acquaint himself with accurate facjs by reading the material available and participating in the programs presented in the community.
Mrs. Henry Hoschander was re-elected president of the Woman's Branch, which represents Orthodox sisterhoods throughout Ontario.
