MONTREAL —
Daniel Ben-Natan. new director at the national headquarters of the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University, is a likeable, unpretentious man, the type who prefers to be called just "Danny".
At 33, he kx)ks back on his life with the cairn realization that there has been "a lot under the bch."
.After one year as a representative of the university in Montreal, he has been elevated to a newly-created post; taking on the former responsibilities of Honorary-Secretar>" Sam Risk and E.xecutive Vice-president: Joan Ball.
Born Daniel Lipkin. his family immigrated to Israel from their native Winnipeg in 1951 when he was nine.
Ben-Natan began his sustained interest in the Hebrew University as a political science and international relations student following a stint in the paratrooper division of the Israeli army.
Upon finishing a masters degree at the University of Brussels. Ben-Natan began a career that lasted several years in the Israeli foreign service. He was sent to Jerusalem, Belgium and Mali in West Africa. -
"My career has always been one of being the youngest in my post. In the foreign seryice I was
much younger than the others in the Israeli delegation and at social functions I was often mistaken for one of their sons." said Ben-Natan now smiling about it.
It was in the foreign ' ser\ice that Danny Lipkin became Daniel Ben-Natan. at the urging of the Israeli government.
Ben-Natan then returned to the Hebrew University before coming to Montreal as assistant to the president, again one of the youngest men to ever assume the job.
As a result of his travels, he is left with an "international family" — an Israeli-born wife, a son bom in Belgium, and a daughter in Canada.
The new director sees the Hebrew University, which recently celebrated -its 50th anniversary', as not only "the foremost institution of higher learning in Israel but the university of the Jewish people."
The Canadian Friends, under the national presidency of Allan Bronfman 'for many years, has branches in Toronto. Win-nif>eg. and Vancouver and chapters throughout the Jewish commuriity;
Ben-Natan takes pride in the fact that the organization has a large attraction "at the grassroots level."
, A family endowment plan designed to meet the Hnancial capabilities of the average Jewish house-
hold with bonds beginning at SI.000 payable over a number of years, forms much of the Friends' revenue.
Only the interest is used in such projects as helping needy Israeli students, sending Canadian youth to the Hebrew University, or bringing top professors from Israel to speak to the Jewish community.
A portion of the funds collected in Canada are going into the rebuilding of the Mt)unt Scopqs campus, the site of the Canadian Centre for the Social Sciences.

TORONTO -
Bruce of Crescendo, one of the trendiest h a i r-dressing salons in Toronto, has lost the impeccable services of an exceedingly proficient hair stylist. Charles ("China") Marcus, a Vidal Sassoon-train-cd hairdresser, has decided to trade in his easy, effete existence for a much hardier and elemental kind of life on a northern Israeli kibbutz.
"1 want to get away from cvcrvthing. I need a complete change." said Marcus, a dark and handsome 23-year-old native of Liverpool who has resided in Toronto for the last 3'/2 years.
"Here, people just exist," he added emphatically in his Manchester accent. "1 want to live life to the fullest iand gain complete hicntal and spiritual satisfaction."
Ma reus, who was brought up in Manchester
is going to Israel with the idea of staying. Since he has been in Israel several times already, he has few illusions about how difficult it may be to adjust. Nevertheless, Marcus iuingcrs to get away from the materialistic life style ' he now rejects and to cither settle down on a kibbutz as,an agricultural A\biker or to try his luck as a hairdresser in Tel Ayjv or .Icrusaleni.
Several motives impel hini to Israel.
"I like the feci and freedom of the country." he asserted. "1 also want to identify myself as a .lew. it"s very dilTicult to do it in Canada because it is so large and diverse. Fthnic Canadians, too. arc trying to find their ancestral roots."
But Marcus also feels he can accomplish a-lot more in Israel, which he terms "younganddynamic." As he puts it: "You can
change things there, and 1 don't particularly want to change things in Canada or Britain. .Toronto is a great city, very young and exciting, a place of tremendous opportunity. It "s clean and impressively safe, but I couldn't live mv whole life here."
Interestingly, Marcus did not use the facilities of the Israel Aliyah Centre in Toronto to case his immigration. "I preferred to do it myself and spare them the expenses. I didn't want their handouts," he said.
As well, he attended few meetings of a local university Zionist club he ji^ined soon after deciding to go on aliyah. "It was a farce." he explained. "The group was badly organized and I didn't think the people were particularly exciting'. They were a bunch of spoiled kids who'll never go to : Israel as immigrants."
Marcus.. who plans to leave for. Israel in early September, has chosen to live on a kibbutz rather than in the city because he likes its natural tranquility, fresh air and camaraderie. In 1971, he and a few friends from Manchester studied Hebrew at Kibbutz Ha'ogcn and
llicn switched to Kibbutz Ma'abarot: After some 10 months . in Israel, he returned to Britain. But within months wanderlust overtook him and he found himself in Toronto.
He latched onto a job at Vidal Sassoon's, where he niastercd the renowned Sassoon technique of hair styling. Marcus met Sassoon. scion of a distinguished Anglo-.lcwish family. "He's a real Zionist, part of our conversation was in Hebrew ."he disclosed. After Sassoon's he went to Crinipers and tlicn to Bruce of Crescendo. .
Marcus has purposely chosen a small and isi)!ated kibbutz rather than a larger one near the

glitter of the city. He believes he will tliid the peace of mind aiid yearning sense of national identity he so desires in Kibbutz Gonen, which sits in the shadow of the brooding Golaiv Heights.
Despite its remote locale. Marcus will not be tar from old friends, trowaid (Zvi) Wavne is a

Marcus realizes that s;ood friends may not be "vnoiigh to facilitate his smooth integration into Israeli society. But .he is hopeful about the future.
Whether he works as a laborer on the kibbutz or opts out for hair styling in the city. Charles Marcus is serene in the knowledge _that he has finally made the big move to Israel.
Whatever path he ultimately follows, all roads for him will probably/lead to the Promised Land.
