Beaches lure thousands of visitors
MIAMI BEACH —
An infinite variety of hotels ranging from the most luxurious with butlers and sauiia baths to the most modest with ■ocean bathing across the street await the vacationer in Miami Beach.
The wise traveler will consider his budget, number of people in his party, season of the year, and, his interests before selecting just the right hotel to meet his needs.
Hotel rates change with the season. The biggest vacation bargain is the summer starting May 1 and continuing until mid-Gctdber or Nov, 1.
Rooms in the less expensive hotels in summer cost as low as $4 a day or $25 a week. There is an excellent range of hotels in the $14 to $25 class. The more expensive hotels charge $34 to $48, European plan (no meals).
In the spring, which is April, and fall. lasting from approximately Nov. 1 through Dec. 15, room prices are 30 to 50% above those of summer.
An exclusive hotel would charge from $48 to $69 a day.
The more modest hotel usually bills $6 to $10 in spring and fall. Some charge the same in summer, spring and fall. Others charge slightly more in summer than spring and fall.
Hotels have a variety of rate structures. Many favor special individual arid group rates in off season from May 1 to June 15 and Sept. 15 until Nov. \.
Some of the less expensive hotels offer season riates such as $1,500 to $1,600 from Dec. 21 to April 30. and $600 to $750 from May 1 to Dec. 20. Some have monthly rates of $125-250 in the season
and $70-120. off season.
The winter rates are about twice, those of summer but still reflect a value more favorable than most tropical resorts around the world.
Winter is the most popular time in Miami Beach because freezing weather in Canada and most of the U.S. lures the greatest number of people to take advantage of warm weather activities — swimming, sunbathing and boating.
Also, the big name entertainers are booked into the fashionable nightclubs, supper clubs, theatres and auditoriiims during the winter.
Hotel reservations are a must during this busy, height of the season.
Because Mianii Beach is geographically a long, narrow sandbar, all facilities are within walking distance of every hotel.

Preparations for CZF convention in high gear
TORONTO —
CZF Convention Chairman Louis D. Silver reports that preparations for the fourth national convention of the Canadian Zionist Federation, scheduled to be held in Israel from Feb. 9 to 18, 1976 are in high gear.
The response to early release s was overwhelming and registi-a-tion is in full svying, says the CZF in a news release.
Zionists as well as unaffiliated members of the Jewish community are taking advantage of the convention trip package offered ($670 from Montreal) which includes return flight by H Al jet,
deluxe accommodation at Hilton Hotels in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israeli breakfasts and several additionalmeals, as well as all convention program features: meetings with prominent Israelis, touring, workshop excursions for special interest groups, and much more. Arrangements for extended stays in Israel are possible upon request.
Planned for convention delegates and observers are gatherings addressed " by the president, the prime minister, the minister of defence, the Teader of the opposition, cabinet members, the mayor of Jerusalem and other luminaries.
Registration is still open. A deposit of $100 per person will reserve a place; Delegates and observers who pay their deposit before Now. 29 will be eligible to participate in a draw for the basic convention package.
Requests for detailed, 12-page brochure, reservations and deposits should be directed to Convention Co-ordinator Layah Borod in Montreal (1310 Greene Ave. Montreal, Que. H3Z 2B2 — Tel: (514) 934-0804) or in Toronto to Canadian Zionist Federation (Central Region) executive director, Bill Stem. 788 Mariee Ave., — Tel: (416) 787-6171.
really need a car to shop, swim in the ocean, or diiie at a restaurant. Of course, rental cars, buses, taxis and special tour buses and boats are available.
The majority of hotels have swimming pools for their jguests and the larger ones maintain year-round recreational programs for the entire family. -
Some hotels offer spas, golf course facilities, saunas and tennis courts.
No matter what time of the year travelers come to Miami Beach, all types of hotels are prepared to welcome them and make their vacation a "priceless" memory.

Although Miami Beach is in a subtropical latitude and. therefore, warm throughout the summer, surrounding waters and ocean breezes keep temperatures well below the extremes reached in many areas far to the north.
Sun lotions are advised until the visitor acquires a good tan. Special care should be taken to avoid too much exposure to the sun on or near the water, for the reflection adds to the possibility of a bum. A half-hour or so on the beach for the first few days is reasonable. Long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and a wide-brim-

Inexpiensive hats and sandals, of course, may be purchased in Miami Beach and discarded to save luggs^e space. Anything forgotten in packing may be replaced here, for dozens of smart shops as well as regular department stores always are Weil-supplied with the latest in resort and business Wear.
Winter visitors should have light as well as somewhat heavier clothing. It never snows and, seldom frosts in Miami Beach but now and then temperatures in the 40's and SO's are experienced, usually lasting but a day or two.

i YARDENA —
It is a flat wooden bridge that looks as if it leads from nowhere to nowhere. It spans at a point not more than 12 metres wide — one of the most famous rivers in the w o r 1 d — the Jordan From its source on the rocky heights of the Golan to its entrance into the Dead Sea, the lowest body of water in the world, it is a-scant 200 miles.
The Jordan has not a single port, and the villages strung out on its banks are hardly distinguishable from each other. It is not notable for its scenery, long reaches being flat and uninteresting, only the green of the corn fields adjoining giving any visual relief. Yet, its waters are holy to millions of Christians and it is a focal point in folklore and song for many who imagine it to be only a legend and not a real, geographical fact.
Its political significance c a n hardly be exaggerated. A natural boundary between Israel and Jordan, it both divides and unites its neighbors in a unique policy of open frontiers between countries technically at war. It has worked since 1967 and is still working, despite all odds.
The holiday season finds thousands of students coming to Israel from their universities in Cairo, Amman and Ryadh. These are busy days when the guards on the Jordan side have no time to look up from the inspection of passes. On the Israel side, the processing is fast. Just a quick check of the travel permits against the list and away they go. Ostensibly they come to visit families in. Nablus, Hebron and Tubas.
The next biggest surge of traffic over, the bridge, but this time the other way, is at the time of the Hadj, the sacred joumey to Mecca. This trip confers lifelong honor on any Moslem who undertakes it

and is a privilege very much sought after. From the Israeli side no difficulties are made but sometimes Jordan and Saudi Arabia refuse to allow access and the disappointed pilgrims have to wait another year. . One other sudden rush over the bridge caught the guards on both sides napping. This was in 1971, when hundreds of Palestinians, fleeing from the consequences of their abortive coup against King Hussein, preferred to take their chances in Israeli jails than risk facing firing squads at home.
As many as 200,000 people a year use the bridge. The normal offseason volume consists mainly of trucks carrying produce going from Arab farms in the occupied territories to markets in Jordan and elsewhere. Each truck is minutely scrutinized for smuggled gobds. A highly qualified army mechanic is always on duty to spot the odd bulge or thicker-than-usual panel.
Another popular item of contraband is paper for
making cigarettes, which are cheaper and of better quality in Israel. Tourists coming from Jordan into Israel this way for the first t i m e are pleasantly surprised at the speed and informality of the crossing. Some, who are regulars, have ceased to be amazed at the lack of hostility between men who are nominally enemies. When things are slack, both sets of guards sometiipes ad-
vance to the middle of the bridge, exchange cigarettes, news and views and, who knows, maybe discuss the prospects of peace.
