Labor Congress denounces vote

OTTAWA —
The Canadian Labour Congress-has charged that the recent United Nations resolution equating Zionism with - racism has' legitimized , anti-Semitism and anti-J ewish pogroms and warned it will fight any move-tp_ implement the resolution.
CLC President Joe Morris, who is also chairman of the workers' group of the International Labour Organization (a UN agency), said the CLC, which represents over two million Canadian trade
unionists, will continue its efforts to ensure the United Nations system maintains its pommitment to the betterment of mankind and fight all those "who seek to destroy the UN."- ■
"The Canadian Labour Congress is firmly committed to. an end to racism and racial discrimination and has been in the forefront of the international t r a d e union struggle against apartheid," Morris said.

WINNIPEG —
Overwhelming support for the Amal Vocational Scholarship program, an outpouring of tributes to Leon Mitchell, and an address by Premier Ed Schreyer that drew a standing ovation highlighted the first Winnipeg d inner of. Canadian Friends of Amal. in Rosh Pina Synagogue.
S o ni e 450 persons, including representatives . of the legal profession, unions, political leaders and a cross-section of the Jewish community, attended the testimonial event honoring Mitchell for his energetic longtime support for Amal.
Dinner co-chairmen Jack Walker and Murray Tapper termed the support "nothing short of overwhelming;" funds were raised for 300 scholarships.
Premier Schreyer com^ mendied Amal for recog-n i z i n g the need to equalize opportunities for thousaiids of disadvantaged yourig Israelis. , mainly from Asian and African^families.
The premier noted that Israel cannot provide free education beyond grade eight, so programs such
as Amal are. essential to bridge social and economic, gaps.
During his 1972 visit to Israel Premier Schreyer was impressed with Israel's commitment to egali-tarianisni.
He joined in the tributes paid to Leon Mitchell, a prominent labor lawyer and chairman of the province's Municipal Board.
The premier described him as a "judicious man" whose energies have enriched many organizations dedicated to improving the human condition.
Mr. Justice Scott Wright called Mitchell "one of the most outstanding members of the legal profession, a strong human being who has rightly eartied the respect of all sections of society:"
"He's been an inspiration to us alL" said Art Coulter, executive secre-tar\- of the Manitoba Federation of Labor.

The idea is to oet as much as you can for your vailiuble vacation dol-lari For instance; an oceanside resort with a beautiful beach could cost you the same as one without Some places offer special, money saving family rates. Others proffer free entertainment plus boating and fishing. Three oceanfront Resorts have come up vrith a great idea. They'll give you your own Vacation Coordinator who will show. you virhere to go. v^fiat to do. what to see and how to get the most out of your Florida stay. (These are the BEAU RIVAGE. the SAHARA.and the CHATEAU in Miami Beach). This is extremely important since most people miss a lot of available vacation pleasuret.

cies as important to the improvement of the human condition and the disappearance of racism;
"Because of this, the CLC was concerned when delegates at the recent JJN sessions began to subvert the work of the Third Committee of the UN-General Asserfibly by attempting to--append Zionism to every mention of apartheid," he addeO:
"T h i s, campaign increased its momentum when those delegates changed their tactics and introduced the concept of "Zionism as Racism" as a separate resolution.;. By this act. it can justifiably be argued .the UN has "legitimized" anti-Semitism and pogroms against .lews. Canadian labor will ' fight all moves to implement such a resolution and will exercise its influence to prevent further extensions of the resolution." said Morris.
"We have already witnessed attempts to do this at UNESCO, w h ere unfortunately the trade, union movement does not have any sustained right of access and infiuence.
We certainly enjoy these opportunities and responsibilities, at the oldest member of the UN family, the International Labour .OrganizatlonT" ' ~"
In support of the princi-_jjles-..Qf the UN and its agencies, the CLC president remarked: "There are many-critics of the ILO who claim that politiciza-tion has already subverted it from its , proper goals. We do not share this criticism and will not cease our efforts to ensure that the ILO, and the UN system generally, maintain their commitment to work for the betterment of mankind.
"The Canadian Labour Congress will fight those who seek to destroy the ILO, the United Nations Development Program, UNESCO, and the UN, just as it will fight those who recently engineered the. disgraceful association of Zionism with racism." . . ■
