may never be the same'

WASHINGTON, D.C. —
1 fear this city will never be the same after we have left.
The CHAT (Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto) Grade 12 group about which I wrote in this column last week, arrived in Washington after a long and tiring overnight bus ride; that ride had included an early morning
stop somewhere between Toronto and Washington for what was rumored to be breakfast and for shacharit services in a bombshelter-like, underground tunnel.
Bare I y awake^ we began touring the sites of this great city immediately upon arrival here;
First, after dropping off our luggage at the iShera-ton Hotel in Silver Spring, Md., a siiburb of Wash-' ington, we ate lunch on Capitol Hill and, with our enthusiastic rendition of the Grace After Meals, attracted curious, and perhaps suspicipus. spectators, including two police officers in a cruiser.
Then, across the street to the Library of Congress for a walk through the huge Reading Room and the Bicentennial exhibits in the lobby. We spent a while in- the Senate and House of Representatives chambei^, the National Air & Space Museum of the 'Smithsonian Institute a little later that afternoon, the Botanical Gardens and the National Archives.
We visited the Hirsh-hom Museum of the Smithsonian and, while waiting outside after the tour,Yechezkel Zionce interrupted a picture-taking session of models for the fashion magazine

Ebony by walking in front of the camera with his jacket zipped to the top, his collar turned up and~ his cap pulled down ovec__ his ears.
Within a few minutes all 50 of uis, in two large groups with the profes-s i p n a 1 models, were posing for the June issue of Ebony.
At the National Gallery of Art that evening, we a:te special kosher dinners prepacked for us by Washington's Hebrew Academy; We davened mincha and maariv in the basement of the gallery, again creating some interest among the other visitors to the museum.
On to the; Jefferson Memorial. A choir group from Iowa was standing outside on that <x)ld, windy night singing My Coontry 'lis of The«. When they were finished we. standing at the foot of Jeffersoii Memorial under that clear Washingtoii evening sky. gathered around and sang 0 Canada and Hatikvah.
We then returned to our hotel.
Most of us made it back to the bus on time and returned to the centre of Washington for' some shopping; one of many .picture-taking sessions, this time outside the White House.. which is closed to the public on Mondays: and a tour of the fascinating J. Edgar Hoover Building, the new headquarters of the FBI.
Meeting back at the Naitional Archives, we were bussed to the Hebrew Academy for dinner and later that evening were privileged to be addressed by Ephraim Eshel. the information officer of the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
.Early the next morning (mornings always started early), we were oh Our way to New York. Washington, as I started out saying, would be never be the satrie.
Next week: A report from New York City. •
