TORONTO —
It was Israel's 28th birthday party and over 5.000 guests of all ages craninicd into Beth Tzedec Synagogue last week to join in the festive Independence Da y celcbraiioii.
There was something, tantalizing, for e v e r y palate; food, for thought, food fur fueling midnight horas. and food — Israeli of course — just for plain eating.
In the synagogue's crowded main sanctuary, speakers .paid glowing tribute to the achieve-ments-of the state, praised its democratic virtues and denounced its. enemies in the Middle East and United Nations.
Israel's ambassador to C an a d a. . M o r d e c h a i Shalev. in tracing events over the past year, castigated the anti-Zionist campaigns perpetuated by the Arab and Communist bloc nations, which, he added, were pervert-
ing the real function of the international bodies of the UN. .
While he noted that most Western coutitries had by and large refuted the anti-Zionist resolutions launched in the past year, he added:"It is ail the more deplorable that Western opposition to this political extension of the Arab war against Israel is not always as outspoken, as unquivocai and as total as it ought to be considering the real purpose that motivates the Arabs."
The Yom Ha'at^.maut celebration, sponsored by the Canadian Zionist Federation. Central Region, also featured guest speakers Phil Givens, CZF national president, and Ontario Premier William Davis.
In his review of current events. Givens commented on the s t r a i n e d relationship between Israel and the -United States, the state: pf anarchy in Lebanon and the recent
feud between Arabs and Jews in the occupied territories.
Regarding the latter, the Liberal MPP noted: "Probably in all the annals of recorded history there has neve ' been a more benign and benevolent occupying power. The Arabs have been true beneficiaries."
Offering his view of the future, the CZF president added: "We must stand up and fight for what we believe right and not flinch in the face of tremendous odds. This ability is one that has enabled us to survive for 4,000 years, w hi I e empires, dictatorships, republics and kingdoms all around us have fallen;"
But the audience re-s e r v e d its standing ovation for Premier Davis, whom. Givens described as a "true mensch", and who was lauded for the province's decision to cancel last year's UN crime conference because
of PLO participation.
Donning a yarmulke, the premier said that Israel's defiance of her enemies and her survival and strength despite serious assaults, has brought a feeling of relief to the. world.
