TORONTO —
It is a bright summer morning, and_1S three-and four-year-olds and five of their mothers make ; a circle on the playground of Pineway Pubhc School, in the Leslie-Finch area. Led by Orian Feldman. their co-ordinator. they shout, sing and giggle, more-or less to the tunc of an old B'nai B'rith camp song, "we are the Pint-size Playtime group right herc;.."
They arc all participants in a unique mini-camp, sponsored by the Northeast Jewish Community Services, for children who will be starting nursery school in the fall. The two-hour-a-day pro' gram, modelled on the day camps their older brothers and sisters attend, includes playground games, arts and crafts, more songs, some in Hebrew, and even a bnce-a-weeic cooking session;
Mrs. Feldman, a warm, outgoing young mother of two. who cheerfully admits that "my own mother insists I've never grown up." is sitting on the ground holding a not-quite-three-ycar-old. For the first few days, he cried as his mother left, but now he is eager: to come — provided he can sit in Mrs. Feldman's lap for the opening circle.
"Get your ciaterpillars out," she tells tht children, and thev march
their fingers up their arms as they sing of "little Arabella Miller." who "found a creepy caterpillar." Once the caterpillar is disposed of. they split into four groups, each led by one of the mothers, and head for the playground or the arts and crafts area.
The camp, is a co-operative one, which means that the parents act as staffers, with each parent volunteering one morning a week. Mrs. Feldman. who has directed programs for pre-schoolers and their mothers at the YMHA. gives the mothers a greal deal of reisponsi-bility. "rm treating the pairents as counsellors," she points out. while acknowledging that one of the things she has had to learn is to hold back and let the parents take over.
The involvement of the mothers, while it helps! to keep costs down, is important for other reasons as well, according to Carol Hacker, the Northeast Jewish Community Services staffer responsible for the program. "Our focus is really on development of the community— and this program involves the mothers." she. explains.
The fact that the camp is a Jewish one is: important to her. Although the Jewish content is introduced casually, in keeping with the very young ages of the children, it provides an atmosphere

which reinforces their sense of Jewishness. A song naming parts of the body is sung in Hebrew, the shacks are kosher, and among the arts and crafts projects are a Kid dush cup and a mobile with Jewish motifs. And on Friday mornings, in a simple 6neg Shabbat, one of the mothers and her four-year-old daughter light the candles, while one of the little boys makes the blessing over a cup of kosher grape ji'ice.
Mrs. Hacker believes that focusing, on preschoolers .makes sense in an area where the majority of families arc young. This fall the Northeast Jewish Community Services and the North York Public Library will co-sppnsor a creative play program for mothers and young childreri, led by Mrs. Feldman, and ah eight-week discussion program on the pre-school child.
Judgirig by the children's reaction, the preschoolers appreciate thie attention theyj are receiving. As the groups corhe together for the closing circle, artwork is clutched proudly in paint-stained fingers and the "do-it-yourself sundae has ringed a few smiles with strawberry sauce. "Goodbye, my friends, goodbye," 25 little voices chorus. And then. "Shalom, veladim, shalom."
