TORRANCE, Ont.—
Special programing here at Camp Massad was a big hit this summer hier. All of the full-day educational, cultural and athletic' events were well accepted by the campers, who range from ages five to 15.
One typiical example was Olympics Day. Children, of all ages participated in land sports such as discus and javelin throws, the
mile run, high and Jong jumps; the lOO-metrc and 220-nictre dashes, as weil as water sports such as . individual medlies, 400 metre swimming relays, and backstroke, breast-stroke, butterfly and freestyle races.
An hour-long marathon closed the day's events. Leapfrogging, crabwalk-ing. talking to hors*es, singing Adon 01am. port-aging and paddling canoes backwards, swimming, flowing °up bal-
loons; eating cookies and bobbing for apples were ■ all part of the marathon, aiid all with the intent of beating the other teams.
The day. co-ordinated by, Brian .lafine . and Shawn Klerer. ended with the prcscjUation of awards and a daTrce.
A week earlier, another "special day", w'as commemorated: Tisha B'Av. Dramatic presentations were planned and very meaningfully executed by the 14 counsellors-in-
.training. here at camp along'with their coHirdi-naior. Howie Parker.
An emotional 40-min-ute play on the eve of the, fast which recalls the destruction ofHhe Holy Temples depicted the tra^ gic plight, of Sovict^Jews over the past century; the failure, of .Icwish settlc-iuent in eastern Russia, the massacres and pogroms and the need to continue showing solidarity with oiir oppressed brothers wherever they are.
The play, directed by Fred. Winegust. was followed by several very moving tableaus — scenes represented by people posed, niotionless and silent — alotig the lorclilit road from the
w aterfront: Campers and staff alike w ere given ver>-vivid glimpses of what it niust have looked like in ^Auschwitz, at, Lpd. at Maalot. at the, Munich Olympics and wherever Jews are slaughtered in the name of their beliefs.
'The next "special pro-granr" w-as" Camp Mas- " sad"s traditional three-day color war ("Massa-dia"L Kept secret until the monient it begins, Massadia calls for the entire camp, campers and staff, to be divided into two teams for the entire . camp, campers and" staff, to be divided into two teams for land and water sports as well as creative works such as plays, songs, flags, banners and the like. "Ruach" (spirit)
plays the major role in distinguishing Massadia from any other day ^;>f competition held during the summer.
The last night of camp saw the last of' the many special programs — the final banquet. The theme was Bar Mitzvah, and a mock Bar Mitzvah was run for the camp, while staff; in several short skits recalled and recreated some of the finer and more memorable moments of the summer.

Salo Baron, the emi-"nent Jewish historian, will deliver the Joseph and Gertie Schwartz Memorial Lectures at the University of Toronto from Nov; 8-10.
Prof. Baron's stature as a historian rests on his lb-volume, A Social and Religious Histor> of the Jews, and his numeroiis other publications, but also his particularly humanistic and pluralistic approach to the stiidy of Judaism.
What was the interaction between Jcw.s and their neighbors? If the Jews . influenced the world, how has the world influenced the Jewish people?
In considering these questions, as a . social historian, his emphasis has been on the behavior of the jews as a people.
rath e r than; on the achievement of individual figures:' he has studied the interaction Of Jews aiyd their environment.
.Appropriately enough, the titles of his three proposed lectures reflect these concerns: "Historic Experience and Contemporary .Anxieties." "Liberalism and the Jew: a Historical. Appraisal." "Nationalism and Reli-. gion Today as viewed from the Jewish Perspective." .
Born in Tarnow. Gali-cia. Baron moved early.in World War I to Vienna where he studied and.received doctorates in philosophy, political science and' law. .After several years of teaching in Vienna, he went to the United States at the invitation of Rabbi.Stephen S. Wise to teach at the Jewish Institute of Religion in New-
York in 192t..
From 1930 to 1963 he taught at Coliimbia University, and served as director of the Centre of Israel and Jewish Stiidics at ..Columbia from 1^50-; 1%8. From 195^ he also taiight at the J e w i s h Theological Sehiinary.
He was the first member of an American his-, lory department. to teach Jewish studies; The many such chairs that now exist ' owe much to his example, and a substantial number of his former students are among their occupants.
.Among Baron's many iinolvemeiits in public and academic affairs is his f(ni n d i ti g a n d p re s i d e n c> of.leuish Cultural Reconstruction, a bbdv which after. World. War "ll,worked in identifying and reclaiming libraries and cultural treasures despoiled bv the Nazis.
