Presidents of amalgamating synagogues get together Tbey are Lou Lukofsky(Ieft) of Anshe Libavitch and Murray Frieberg of Shaarei Tefillah on Bathurst
up
TORONTO -
Con t r e Avenue in downtown Toronto doesn't exist any more, but the synagogue buih there in 1903 is still alive and entering a new chapter in its history„
Now. in its 73rd year of existence, it is amalgamating with the Shaarei Tefiliah Congregation, whjch is celebrating its 25t"h anniversary fh i s year.
The original group of Russian Jews who found-: ed the Anshei Libavitch in 1903 managed in make-. shift premises until 1907. when they built their first synagogue.
It was a traditional congregation, and through the years it stayed that way. The synagogue building was expropriated and demolished in 1969. , In the intervening years. - the members have scattered to various other congregations.
Now. they arc perpetuating the traditions and ideals of the original pioneer founders by amalgamating with S h a a r e i Tefillah.
Murray Frieberg,'president of Shaarei Tefillah for the past seven years, said the ideals of the Anshei Libavitch and his synagogue are so elosely intertwined that the amalgamation cannot fail to be beneficial to both congregations and to the coni-munity-at-Iargc. "Indeed several former members of Anshei Libavitch already belong to our shul.'' he said.
"When Shaarei Tefillah was founded at Bathurst
and Wilson 25 years ago. it was considered a pioneer group, for there were relatively few Orthodox synagogues in the sub-. urbs at that time. Nov,-, we are at the epicentre of, .lewish'life in Toronto.
".We are proud that during this quarter-century anniversai-y; Shaarei Tefillah has the privilege to >vcIconic into'its midst another congregation with identical goals and aspirations." ,
Lou Lukofsky. president of Anshei Libavitch.. echoed those sentiments..'. "Dcrcch erctz: the respect we have for our parents and graiid-parcnts — that's what kept the spirit of An.shei Libavitch alive. It is the respect for traditional Jewish values which we share with Shaarei Tefillah that prompted us. to amalgamate with them."
The 10 Torah scrolls of Anshei Libavitch will be broiight to Shaarei Tefillah in a.festive procession starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12. from the home of David Mal-kin. 9 Almington, Downs-view.
The procession will proceed to Shaarei tefillah Synagogue, 3600 Bathurst where a Torah scroll will be dedicated by a member of Anshei Libavitch. Myer Lukofsky. in memory of his late beloved parents.
At 6 p.m., there will be a cocktail reception and banquet at Shaarei Tefiliah Synagogue to formally celebrate the amalgamation of the two congregations. •
