This month marks the 10th anniversary of Meals on Wheels, the concept of a small group of dedicated ladies of the Hebrew Weston Charitable Services who have seen a phenomenal growth in this worthwhile work. Meals is just orie of many services operated by Coordinated Services to Jewish Elderly.
"In 1<)66 the number of meals delivered during a t-wo month p e r i 6 d amounted to 48," said Pearl Langer, CSJE president. "In 1975 the total number of meals delivered during the year was 34.500 and the demand for this service continues to grow."
The reason for the phenomenal increase in re-q u e s t s for Meals on Wheels during the past year, says Mrs. Langer, is due largely to government cutbacks in hospital expenditures. "Patients are ; being released from hos; pttal much earlier now, following surgery and treatment. We fill in the gap during convalescence at home, by providing a daily nourishing meal on a short-term basis."
Recipients of the serviced which include the elderly, handicapped and recently-hospitalized, pay for the meals on a sliding scale. Those who are unable to pay the full fee are subsidized by CSJE which receives funding, from the' United Way. the province and Metro. CSJE was organized and operated under the auspices of the then United Jewish Welfare Fund and became an independent agency in 1975, under Executive Director Michael Scheinert.
The 10th anniversarj-celebration of Meals on Wheels will take place on the evening of Monday, Oct. 25, at the official opening of a unique conference devoted to the role of the volunteer. Entitled "You — the Volunteer," the conference will help volunteers to see themselves in a new context.
The conference location is the Ontario Room. Mac-Donald Block, Parliament Buildings. Queen's Park. The evening program on the 25th will begin with an official welcome by Pauline McGibbon, lieutenant governor of Ontario. Guest speakers include Margaret Birch, Minister of the Secretariat for Social Development; Lawrence Crawford, director. Senior Citizens Bureau* Ministry of Community and Social Services, and Helen Margison, president. Community Fund of Metropolitan Toronto.
On the following day there will be a series of workshops dealing with the rights of volunteers, the volunteer-professional relationshijp. CSJE and the community and other topics geared to special concerns and interests of the voliinteer.
''This conference should prove to be a giant step forward in disspell-ing the feeling of inefTec- , tiveness on the part of some volunteers/' said Mrs. Langer. "We at CSJE have a core of more than 400 volunteers, 300 of whom are involved in Meals on Wheels. There . is just no way we could provide the great variety
