of the Arab Jews is also tale of Idealism
By MARCIA KRJETZMER
JERUSALEM —
The Arab Jews, made by Verite Film Productions of Canada, and shown at the First World Jewish Film and Television Festival here, is the stor>' of the other refugees in the Middle East — the Jews from Moslem countries, who lived there a precarious existence, often victims of riots, brutality and summan.- execution, until they fled to Israel. ...
There is another story behind the 27-minute long film: a stor>- of the idealism, commitment and determination of a group of Canadian Jews,
A little over a year ago. Mark Dolgoy. a documeri-tar\' film producer from Edrhonton. concerned at .the growing impact of anti-Israel films being shown on the University of Alberta campus, asked Dr. Noel Jampolsky. an old friend: "Can't we do something about this?"
Dr. Jampolsky. an active worker in fund-raising and other projects on behalf of Israel, alerted other friends in the Edmonton community, arid suggested some private fund-raising for a public interest purpose: to show Jews and non-Jews alike, some of the facts about some 60% of Israel's population — Jews who fled the Moslem countries and came as refugees to Israel.
"We were simply tired
of sitting around, waiting for someone to do something about the stream of Arab propaganda films." Lyla Lebane. executive producer of the film, told The Canadian Jewish News.
• "The films being shown on campus were horrible and sophisticated — some claimed complicity between Nazis and Jews in Mandatory Palestine. Eventually, we just decided to pick ourselves up. aiid do a film ourselves. - The:whole.thing is pfirWe-ly funded, and we are all amateurs except Mark — we wanted to be free to work in our own way and make our own mistakes." The Arab Jews consists
of filmed intcr\iews with emigrants from Middle Eastern countries interspersed with old news-reels and footage garnered from film archives in London.
The Verite team and the 23 people from Edmonton, including investors in the film., who joined them in Jerusa:lem for the festival, were happy and elated people when they, spoke to TheCJN after the film was ' screened to very positive ,^udience response.'
By A. J. ARNOLD WINNIPEG -
A combination of talents* that has rarely been equalled in Jewish music concerts in Canada, was presented here recently by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra before a capacity audience at the Centen-niaf Concert Hall.
The concert was headlined by- the Winnipeg-born Israeli composer-conductor, Aaron Char-ioff, in his Canadian debut performance. It also featured the Sarah Sommer Chai Folk Ensemble and the Winnipeg. Philharmonic Choir with Chief; Justice Samuel Freedman as narrator and Candace Cohen, a Chai alumnus, as one of the soloists^
It was a. three-part concert which demonstrated the wide range of Jewish music and Jewish contributions to music from simple folk tunes to the most advanced symphonic and choral idioms.
Aaron Charloff and the orchestra opened the concert with an inspiring rendition of the tone poem, Emek, by the gifted Israeli composer Marc Lavn, who died in 1967.
The second part of the concert was devoted to Yiddish and Israeli folk music. Here the beautifully costumed Chai Ensemble (dancers and singers) performed an exciting series of Israeli dances at which they are particularly adept.
The Kinderyoren Yiddish song series, in which the Cliai orchestra conducted by Shiriey Golts-man joined the singers and dancers, drew a lesser response than usual from the audience.-Perhaps this was because the acoustics did not make it possible to hear the Yiddish very well.
The orchestra, conducted by Concertmaster Arthur Poison, concluded the second part with an outstanding rendition of a Yiddish Folklore Medley, arranged by Winnipeg composer Victor Davies.
Here the talent of the orchestra, the conductor and the arranger were combined tO: show that Yiddish folk tunes, beginning with Olbi Pripichik, can be imaginatively refurbished to stir an audience that has heard them many times before.
In the final part of the concert Aaron Charloff returned to .the podium to~ conduct the orchestra, chorus and soloists — 300 people — in the world premiere of the cantata he wrote seven years ago. If I Forget Thee .0 Jer-
usalem, is a modetri epic composition based oh Psalms 137 and 150 and the first chaptdr of Ezra. It accounts highlights of biblical Jewish history in four parts: In Solomon's Temple; exile in Babylonia; in the days of King Cyrus and return to the homeland.
The orchestra and chor-' us combined to give the cantata the grand-scale performance that it deserved. Chief Justice Samuel Freedman was the impressive voice of prophecy 'Wfith his pre-re-
corded English narration.
This unusual concert wa$ cosponsored by the Winnipeg Jewish com-
munity's Town Hall Series, now beginning its 11th season. The Town Hall Series, started 10
years ago by Canadian Jewish Congress, is now administered by the Winnipeg YMHA.
