Parshat Tpldot
Vayehee kee zakain Yitzhak.'.. And it came to pass when Isaac was old, his eyes became dim....
You can't wear a stone yarmulke — how can you serve G-d with a concrete heart....
The saintly Be'er Mayim Chaim had a son who turned bad. The tzadik continued to support him despite his rebellious ways. He looked heavenward — "PSbono shel blam, if 1 can support my son although he's strayed, can't you help Your children Israel despite their sins?"
You can't be a chicken in the shul and a tiger at the bank — trampling others^ What good is a fat siddur with a skinny conscience? Consider..,, when Jacob disguised himself as his wicked btx>ther Esau, Isaac cried — "hakol, kol Yaakov, v'hayodayim y'dal E8av...the voice is the voice-of -Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.!." Jacob wondered — what is this, an anatomy
By CHAIM YEHUDA
In celebration of its Independence Days in 1971 and 1972, Israel issued in each of these years a set of four com-memoratives and a souvenir sheet depicting the Gates of Jerusalem.
These stamps were beautifully designed by E. WeishOff of Tel Aviv and each stamp was printed in sheets of 15 with five tabs. Each tab bears the emblem of the state of Israel and the inscription in Hebrew, "Independence Day" and the year.

course? What's the difference whose hands they are?:" ', ■'/
But Isaac prayed — "what good is it iif Jacob's children shackle all day over a siddur, but then they disgrace G-d's name by shady business deals, or with selfishness? What good is it to recite psalms, but then build apartment houses and shut the door to families with children? A Jew's checkbook should be a little Torah...." (Dubner Maggid)
But you can't make a chassid out of a monkey — a Jew has to learn not to ape others. Imagine... .when Jacob was bom, "v'yado o'cbez-et ba'aludy Esav — his hand clasped Esau's heel..." It's Weird, though — what was Jacob, a podiatrist? Why hold, Esau's heel?
Ah, but it teaches....there are some Jews who think they'll get ahead by holding on to Esau's heel — aping the Gentiles around us....Rabbis who think they're handsomer walking around without yannulkes...bar mitzvahs that are not complete unless the boy and his friends get their own rock band to get stoned with...parents who have to look up dictionaries of English names because Moshe or Rachel or Mendel is not good enough....(Drashot El Amee)
Gentiles respect Jews who stick to their faith and observance, don't compromise, live uprightly, and don't race around trying to curr>' favor....
After all, you have to make the best of every situation. When telephones were first discovered, an old melamet was confused about how to use it Someone patiently taught him. "With one hand you turn the handle, and with the other you put the phone to your ear."
The old man looked up perplexed. "Then with which hand will I talk?"
Can Jews ever be sure about tomorrow?... A lion got a bone stuck in its throat. "Whoever takes the bone out will be rewarded," he announced. A stork rushed ove*, stuck its head into the lion's mouth, and removed the bone with its long beak. "Where's'my reward?" it demanded.
The lion laughed. "Iflletyou putyourhead into my inouth and didn't bite it off, that's reward enough...." (Medrash Rabbah)
Imagine! When Isaac stayed among the Philistines, the king boasted — we did you a lot of good! What was the favor? Asher lo nega'anncha — we didn't touch you....When ourheighbors let us live in peace and don't try to destroy what has taken. so long to build — that's a grolse tova....(Fun Unzer Alter Oitzer)
What security do we have? Only G-d. Only G-d. Nothing else. No one else. Shabbat Shafom.

Beth Tzedec fair
TORONTO —
Children at the Beth Tzedec 'Congregational School are running a book fair on Sunday, Nov. 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on the school premises ^ Proceeds will go to the United Jewish Appeal and other charities.
jEach class will select a traditional institution in Jewish society, to tie in with the theme, Jewish community Ijfe, and set up their books accordingly. The fair was organized by the principal. Rabbi Robert Binder, and teachers.
The Finch Avenue branch of Associated He-
brew Schools is also planning a book fair, to take place on Dec. 5, on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal. The project will be co-ordinated by Esther Gold, principal.
The souvenir sheets were printed in "se-ten-ant" format, consisting of the four stamps without tabs. The margins of these miniature sheets are inscribed "Jerusalem" in English and in Hebrew.
"Se-tenant" is the philatelic term which means djyffei-ent stainps joined together in sheets, strips, pairs, or blocks. -
The gates depicted are attractively emphasized in gold against a solid background. The Jaffa Gate, the most importaint of the gates, is shown on the IL 0.15 stamp of the 1971 set. This gate was built by the Turks in 1538 and has been the centre of "the community and commercial life.of Jerusalem for many generations" according to the Philatelic Ser-vicesi
The IL 0.18 value shows the most recently built gate, the New Gate, con-" structed in 1889. The Shechem or; Damascus Gate is illustrated on the IL 0.35 stamp. This is considered the most beautiful of all of the gates.
The high value" IL 0.85 reveals Herod's Gate,, which is also known as the Flower Gate. It.is named after King Herod, who was responsible for much . of the building in what is known today as Old Jerii-salem.
The 1971 stamps and souvenir sheet should he easy to obtain and the cost will probably just exceed $2 for a set mint with tabs and only slightly less for a set mint without tabs. The 1971 souvenir sheet should be: available for about $3 to S4 mint at today's market prices.
The 1972 continuation of the Gates of Jerusalem stamps will be discussed in a subsequent article.
