Moshav group
OTTAWA —
' A group of Ottawa Jews has formulated a plan to start a moshav in Israel. Target date for aliyah is 1978/79.
Avi Poriah. a federal civil servant, says the group is looking for recruits no older than 35. Only families and married couples need apply. All persons bom in Canada, naturalized or those with landed immigrant status are eligible.
The proposed moshav, to be located between Haifa and Safed, will be a-settlement combining the best characteristics of kibbutz life and private living arrangements. It would begin with about 35 to 50 couples and be based on agriculture.
All work would be communal, yet each family would have its own home, private possessions and family life. Such things as health needs, schooling and social/cultural activities would be communal, he said.
The Ottawa group is still small, consisting of several teachers, a student, a probation officer, a secretary and an accountant. And their backgrounds are just as varied, with some coming from Young Judea and Habonim and others coming from no Zionist background at all.
Religious views range from non-observance to Orthodox, but all moshav communal facilities will be kosher,

Coach isn^t selected
ByMOURAWOLPERT
HAMU.TON —
A Hamilton mother is "very disappointed" that the only Jewish head coach in Canada, Mark Solomon of the Hamilton Aquatic Club, "hasn't even been considered" as official coach for the swim team that will represent Canada at next July's Maccabiah in Israel.
"I'm really very surprised, '' says Valda Levin. whose 16-year-old son, Simon, is currently training hard in order to qualify for the team. "We don't have that many Jewish coaches in Canada."
Furthermore, charges Mrs. Levin, Jewish kids in Canada have no incentive to excel in sports. The Levins hail from Australia aind there, she says, "all the kids would have been very excited" about an important sports event like the Maccabiah. There has been little publicity and surprisingly little interest . particularly in view of the boost to Canadian sports following last year's Olympics.
At Hill Park Recreation Centre pool, meanwhile. Solomon, a Bostonian who has been coach of the Hamilton club for the past three years, shrugs it off but one can sense the disappointment. As far as coaches are concerned, he ; feels Canadian Maccabiah organizers don't seem to be too serious about promoting this as a Jewish event.
"No one ever called." he states, despite the fact that he was highly recommended by the Jewish Community Centre's Executive Director Sam^ Brownstone.
The coach chosen to accompany the C^anadian team is a non-Jew. coach of the Pointe Claire. Montreal club, which, has supplied most of the swimmers on the team.
"Maybe that's the reason," but what hurts is that no one even bothered to find out more about him. "If I hadn't been here as a Jewish coach, the kids wouldn't even be trying out."
The kids are Simon and 14-year-old Jonathoh Morris. Both are excellent swimmers and hard workers but there have been some problems.
Simon had quit two years ago at 14' 'because I had reached my peak at 12...and I got dejected working so hard with noth-
ing happening." Considering him a very talented swimmer. Solomon coaxed him out of "retirement" and since January. Simon has been hard at work trying to get back into shape.
Jonathon missed a month's training earlier in the year as the result of an accident and more recently he was ill for a couple of

weeks. If he doesn't make it this time, Solomon is "positive" he'll make it next time. He's a distance swimmer and improving all the time'.'
Both boys will be taking part in an Ontario-wide swim meet at McMaster University on June 10 and will join the team if they make the qualifying time.
Another area youngster
trying out for the Maccabiah is tennis player Rina Pupkoof Dundas, who will be 15 in September. She placed first in the 14-and-under category in the CNE Invitations Tournament two years ago but as there will be no age categories in the Maccabiah, she may have to compete against players considerably older.

British fascists worry Jews
TORONTO —
The rise of anti-Semitic fascist parties in Britain is being watched closely by British Jews. Lord Fisher of Camden told a meeting last week of Toronto Jewish-Congress Council.
He said the fascists are, well financed by groups in and outside of Britain who want to see democracy^ fall.
The two principal fascist groups, the National Front and National Party, polled 120.000 votes in the recent Greater. London Council elections. Projecting this over the entire United Kingdom, Lord Fisher said that if a general election was held within a year, the fascists could poll well over a million votes and probably elect some members to the House of Commons.
Lord Fisher, who is president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and chairman of the European section of the World Jewish Congress, said a big danger is that the. fascists, who have said they will field 500 candidates in the next general election, will be given almost equal radio and TV time as the Labor and Conservative parties because free time is allocated on the basis of the number of candidates each party runs. There are 613 seats in the House of Commons.
British Jews are "of good heart and we are fighting the battle well." Lord Fisher said. "We are confident fascism will never take hold in Britain but we are keeping a close watch on the situation. Watchfulness doesn't cost much. If you take steps early you can prevent later problems. You in Canada should also be on the alert."
Discussing the situation of Jews in Europe, Lord Fisher expressed concern for their future. "European Jewry, risen frpm the ashes of the Nazi crematoria, are merely embers as compared with the bright fires of the pre-war
eras." he declared. "The doubt is evident whether they will remain for more than another generation or two. Either through the harsh measures of the Soviet authorities in one part of the continent or the erosion of assimilation and intermarriage in the other half, we are in danger of destruction asa people." he warned.
