Registration for the Jewish Community Centre's Sunday afternoon children's programs has doubled that of last year since its move to the Dundas Recreation Centre last month.
The centre's present Delaware Avenue location in east Hamilton has been blamed for the steady decline in Sunday after noon attendance as the Jewish population moved westward, though the distance, youth director Am-mi Shaw points out with' a smile, is probably only psychological.
From most homes in west Hamilton, driving time to the Dundas location is about the same as to Delaware Avenue but he does concede that it is closer to the Dundas surveys, where many Jewish families now live.
But whatever the reason, both Shaw and JCC
AmmiShaw executive director Sara Brownstone are happy with the result. There is a new enthusiasm in the community that has not been evident for a long time, says Brownstone and one thing he's particularly pleased about is that more parents have become involved. Also, Dun^ das town ofRcials have been most co-operative in renting the centre to the JCC for Sunday programs. The programs, too, are
reported better than they have been in the past, thanks largely to a better skilled and more experienced staff than the JCC has had for some years. The vicious circle of dwindling enrolment, reduced income from memberships and consequent cutting of expenses resulting in less attractive programing appears to have been broken at last.
So far, only the children's programs have moved, but there are plans for holding some of the cultural events for adults at the same location. A sports skills' school held last year at the Hamilton Hebrew Academy was so successful it will be repeated this year. The old building will be turned over to the teens for their program for the time being.
Brownstone sees this move to the west as the beginning of a new era for the centre. Though he won't commit himself, he

For Shaw this is the last job before returning to his native Israel later this year and he is leaving behind a meticulously planned program to enable his successor to take over in midterm with a minimum of disruption.
But even while in Israel Shaw intends to keep in touch with some of the JCC programing. He is "willing to help in any way I can."

There was a great turnout at the first meeting of the UJA Construction Division this week, under the chairmanship of Marty Mradelow. A lot of cards were assigned and Marty and his co-chairmen have promised to press ahead to complete at least 75% of coverage by the end of the year.
Kx an earlier meeting of the division, a couple of weeks ago, Marty said the message to get across to prospects is that Israel is again in crisis. "Never has Israel been more isolated than she is right now," he said. "There is a concerted and calculated effort to destroy her by enemies who are far more sophisticated in their tactics than ever before."
Stan Kates, co-chairman of Graphics and Communications, is bringing his professional advertising expertise to the group to promote the campaign. One of the first steps is to broaden the scope of coverage. Letters are going out to all current contributors asking them to suggest additional names of both potential canvassers and contributors.

Linda Shapiro, one of the most active canvassers in Films & Entertainment, told me last week she would like "something different" for the campaign. Well, just be patient. Linda. Your chairman. Garth Drabinslcy. wiU
have an announcement soon that should please you.

At a meeting of Lawyers, held in the office of co-chairman PhU Sdiwartz, the decision was made to concentrate first on prospects who will likely co-operate in the drive to complete 75% coverage by Dec. 31.
Michael Kesteoberg, one of the newer legal lights, has undertaken to canvass the recent law graduates now in practice. Mike says there's great potential leadership in this group.

Travel agents are busy guys these days lining up . vacations for the upcoming holiday break. However, co-chairman Dave Freodmaim, Hugh Beaig and Brace Cole are not too busy to plan ahead for the campaign and they promised they urill be in high gear as soon as the rush is over.

Ben Schneider, chairman of Community Services, the group that takes in the entire "Jewish civil service," tells me he's been meeting with directors of the various local agencies and institutions and that the canvass will be starting soon. Ben says many of the contributors in this group are non-Jews.
There's a lot of "new, young blood" in Hardware and Housewares, report co-chairmen BUI Dunn and David Green. There was a good distribution of cards at a recent meeting of the group and good increases from the canvassers. I was at the meeting and was impressed with ,the enthusiasm.
• ■*■■■* *, Congratulations to Da>id Franklin and Tom Kirscfa-
ner, co-chairmen of the Young Executives. They phoned to tell me they got increases of 100% and more at their first meeting this week. The meeting was held in Hanry . Kidder's office. As soon as cards were assigned, canvassers got on the phones right on the spot and within minutes lined up appointments and made actual solicitations.
New canvassers, (quite a few of them) will learn the ropes by being teamed with the experienced ones.
"Every one present, both the new ones and the veterans, made an exemplary gift," Dave and Tom told me. "Thisis the rule before canvassers can take cards."
The "750/0 completion by Dec. 31" theme is being emphasized at all UJA meetings, as can be seen in this photo. At the milce is Jack Chisvin, chairman of the campaign cabinet, presiding at the campaign Idck-off held last weelc. At left is Jack Rose, who gave the meeting hints on how to handle reluctant contributors.
