Members of the Tribe
by Richard Kluger Doubleday of Canada $11.95
In April. 1913. Mary Phagan, a 14-year-old , factory worker, was found murdered in the basement ,of the Natioq^l ^feoql. Compaiiy of Af^taig^pta^;^ Twenty-eight months later' a howling lyncl\ mob ig-nominiously dragged Leo N. Frank from a prison cell and hanged him. The victim was manager of the factory and a former president of Atlanta B'nai B'rith.
It is now widely agreed thai the unfortunate Frank was convicted-by a hostile jury in an atmosphere of intolerance and near hysteria. His sins were multiple. He was a Jew. a Yankee, a college graduate and a "capitalist."
The courageous governor of the state ruined his political career by commuting the death sentence, but Tom Watson, publisher of the virulent anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic Jeffersonian Magazine, used the opportunity to exploit the fears and frustrations of the poverty-stricken tenant farmers and millhands of Georgia and to elevate himself to the United Stiates Senate'.. In significant ways the Leo Frank tragedy paralleled the more famous, darlier.
Dreyfus case in France.
The first half of this long, absorbing and detailed story is narrated by a sensitive Jewish lawyer named Seth Adler, originally from the North, who had gradually, but not without misgivings, integrated himself into the southern way of life. He is determined to help in the
Noah Berg, the fictibivar prototype of Leo Frank.'
The second half of the novel is a taut, suspense-ful account of the 28-day trial, conducted in almost semi-tropical heat, with a parade of motley witnesses, as described in the memoirs of Seth's daughter Judith.
Seth. disturbed and sickened by the prejudice displayed, unwilling to share in the ongoing destiny of the South, moves back to the North of his youth.
A brief epilogue written in 1976 by Seth's grandson is a glowing account of the progress that Jews have made in the United States since the tragic events in Georgia. "Jews ser\e, as of this writing, as the United States secretary of state, U.S. attorney-general, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, senior senator of New-York and Connecticut, mayor of New York City, president of E.l. DuPont de Nemours & Company, publisher of The New York
Times and the Washington Post, preside-nt of Dartmouth College and Rutgers University, chairman of the American Broadcasting Corporation of America, managiiig editor of Time and Newsweek, and the leading left-handed starter on the pitching staff of the New-York Yankees."
It is regrettable that the author, in his fictional account, has deviated ex-

tcnsively from the facts of the case, not always to Frank's advantage. However, Members of the Tribe is a memorable, fast-paced novel, packed with ideas and information about the development of Jewish life in ihe United States, especially the South, against the background of a relatively little-known but crucial episode in American Jewish historv.

Save electricity, save money.
There are two ways saving electricity can save money.
First, the obvious one. The less you use, the less you have to pay for. And today, electricity is simply too valuable to waste.
Second, something not so obvious. Ontario uses more and more power every , year. This means an ever increasing investment in plant and equipment..,and their cost is rising rapidly. The cost of fuels is also increasing rapidly. These costs inevitably show up in the price you pay for electricity.
You can help to slow down the growing demand by using electricity wisely. Dont waste it.
Conserve energy. The future depends on it.
