Mr. Klein, playing at the InitTivatiorial Cinema, is till! of iiuerosting ideas and notions, uhich, if developed properly, could make this a fascinating film.
But because director Joseph Losey and writer Frank Soiinas do not develop important ideas, and choose to mislead the audience on wild goose chase s. t h e fi 1 ni ■■ m i s s es ■'. i sv muddled and vague.
The movie takes place in Occupied France in 1942 Klein is a prosperous art dealer, and we first see him dickering with a man over the price of a painting the man wants to sell. Klein makes him an unsatisfactory offer which the man is forced to take; he is desperate to leave the
Plea for justice by U.S. Catholic
country because he is a Jew.
When he is seeing the man out. Klein is surprised to find a Jewish newspaper deliver-«?<l to^^s door, by error he says, for -he is not a snfascfiber or a Jew. Director and writer spend so much^time showing Kleiti tryjng to discover the reason for this mistake that we are led 10 suspect that he is really a Jew trying to protect himself by hiding the fact — sort of a case of ' Me thinks the fellow doth protest t.>o much' (to misquote Shakespeare).
When. Klein does find the reason — there are two Kleins; the other is a Jew and the two are being mistaken for one another — his obs&ssion in trying_j(v find his "'double"""^a^in leads us to believe that our art dealer is trying to hide the fact-tha-p-he may be Jewish.
Wild goose chases, Losey and Soiinas are playing'games with us when they should be getting down to business. The question should not be ""Is Klein Jewish?" (He is not.). The question should be "Why is he trying so
hard to prove that he is not Jewish, that there, has been some mistake".'""
fhe answer, quite simply, is that life foi^a Jew in "-Occupied France as4ji,_the rest of Furope-«ias intolerable. Ihis idea is not de-veluped as it should be. It isalliided to vaguely. The " [Hire horror of the situation t\iii onl\ be captured by the cold, hard facts, and Losey and Soiinas choose to ignore them and .

Honor The Promise B\ Robert F. Drinan Duubledav of Canada S9.50
Thisns an extraordinary indictment of Christiam-tv's treatment of the Jewish people through the ages. b>' the first Catholic priest ever elected to the United States Congress. It IS at the same time an un-swerviiig defence of Israel's right to exist
It' should be read by every open-minded and concerned person — especially Christians. Many readers will find his de-nunciaiioii of the "teaching of contempt" that has . its origins in the New Testament and subsequent teachings of the Church an eye-opening and startling experience.
For Drinan'. Israel, and the Christian attitude to it. is the , supreme testing ground. ".-\ major source, of friction in conicmporary Jewish-Christian relations is Christian hostility and indifference to the state of Israel."
Standing always on moral ground, the author urges his fellow .-Xmeri-cans not to be swayed by .Arab econoniic 'blackmail or to falter in support, for' Israel in her ongoing confrontation with her.neigh-. bors. '■ ' ..
■fhe Christian world nuist support Israel, not only because it *as largely responsible for the-genocide policy that led to the Holocaust, but also because Israel is the ful-, filnient of biblical prophesy and a .new form of hope . • for humanity, notes the author.
L")rinan. out of the depthsof his deep concern and .pain, has written a relatively short, but incisive, reasoned, carefully researched and impassioned book. Here is a plea for justice and understanding that cries" out for a wide readership.
