The proper Hebrew translation is shibbolet shoual, although in antiquity it was also known under other names.
The mention of oats crops up in several places in the Mishnah, for instance in the tractate Hal-lah, which deals with the portion of dough to be laid aside as an offering — showing that oats were quite commonly used to bake bread. The addition of oats to bread or cookies gives a satisfying
Tu b'Shvat highlights
NEW YORK —
With Tu b'Shvat approaching on Jan. 23, the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York's World Over Magazine offers some interesting insights into some of the history and background of the holiday.
In biblical and Talmudic times., the children of Israel were told to bring a portion of fruits'*(and other crops! to the Temple. This tax uas called a tithe. During the time of the Mishiia. the question arose When does the year for ihc fruits begin? The schoolof Hillel answered: the l.^th of Shevat, or Tu b'Slnat. The heavy rains of umter have stopped, and the almond, the first tree to blossom in Israel, sliows its flowers.
Tu b'Shvat thus became .1 New Year for the trees. Today, children all over Israel plant trees on Tu b'Shvat. Many of those.' trees are paid for by Jew-i'sh,children in Canada and . around the world.
Here, also from World Over, is a stoi-y about a special tree in Israel, the tamarisk. The tamarisk is an "air conditioner," although, with its large leafy branches, it looks unlike any air conditioner one ha's ever Seen. The tamarisk gi^ows in the Ncgev, where an air conditioner can' come in handy. Its branches are covered with salt, iind at. night the salt ab:. sorbs the moisture of the
germ, fresh and dried fruit, chopped nuts and milk, for an energy-packed start to the day.
Another breakfast favorite is granola, which is basically baked muesli. Homemade granola has a light crunchincss. usually
missing from the store-bought varieties.
While delicious, the texture of readymade grano-, la too often resembles granite instead, wreaking havoc with teeth.
The recipe given here takes a bit of fussiiig over (the ini.xture has to be turned and stirred every 10 minutes or so while it is in the oven, to prevent it burning) but yoU will find the effoi-t worthwhile.
Thp other recipe is for a hearty vegetable soup made extra creamy and savory by the addition of a small amount of oatmeal.
