OTTAWA —
An exuberant Ottawa Jewish community gave Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin a hero's welcome to Canada.
Begin and his wife Aiiza were greetedoh the tarmac at Canadian Forces Base Uplands by Prime Minister Trudeau and other officials as their Air
Canada 727 jet arrived from New York at 6:20 p.m. last Monday.
A crowd of over 2.000 people,. waiting inside Hangar 11. sang and shouted their welcome as the Nobel prize-winning peacemaker made his first appearance in Canada as Israeli head_ of government. ~"
As he stepped to, the reviewing stand to receive
full military honors the cheering surged, then turned to song as Hatikvah was played.
Begin conducted a full inspection of the honor guard to the brass and bagpipe tunes of the kilted Cameron Highlanders Band and Havenu Shalom Aleichcms of the crowd, signed the guest book, and n dispensing with pro-
the
tocol, took a walk with Tru-
deau to make personal COnt act wit h t h c peopIe. .
Making his way around the cordoned hall for 15 miniitcs. Begin shook hands, chatted, touched children's heads, and kissed. At one point he stopped to join a group of about 50 children rallied under a banner which read in Hebrew "We are blessed by your arrival. Menachem Begin. FufsiT-
er of Peace. May the- Lord help you."■
While security, both Israeli and Caniadian, tightly surrounded the two leaders. RCMP and military police fought a losing battle to keep the. excited crowd members behind the cordon. Israeli reporters especially were shocked at the lax security, but officials commented that the miliiarv base
was itself a high-security area and met the requirements of the occasion.
At the end of the walk, the Begins climbed aboard. ,a wailing limousine to be whisked along flag-lined streets to 24 Sussex Drive for a working dinner with Prime Minister Trudeau.
An official of the prime niinisier's office ^id the dinner was highlighted by tile three Trudeau children grecTing the Begins with ■"Shalom." and by the youngest Trudeau, Michel, continually repeating his new Hebrew
word at every opportunity.
The dinner, also attended by Israeli ambassador Mordechai Shalev and his
wife, was a kosher meal with Israeli wine.
The subjects of discussion ranged from history
to Bible- to a focus on the . Mideast.
Officials said the two leaders discussed tenror-
isni and hijacking, and then discussed matters relating to the Camp David agreement.

DUAL PLLEGIflXCE: UN miTOBIOBBIIPHY
BEN DUNKELmflN
Forward by Yitzhak Rabin
-In the Queens Own Rifles Ben Dunkelman rose to the ..rank of major—and won the Distinguished Service Cross
as his regiment battled its way from Normandy to the
Rhine.
In Israel, he organized an ill-equipped army, helped clear the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem corridor, and drove th6 Arab •troops from northern Galilee.
His was a DUAL ALLEGIANCE. He devoted his life to two nations. He saw both pain and triumph—and found a satisfaction few men ever know.
