For the past three year?, the Lubavitch Youth Gr-ganization has been pro-vddihg Toronto's Jewish community with_a unique seryicef koshering kitr chens,
The team which sparked this intensified campaign consists oiF Rabbi David Schochet. spiritual leader of the Lubavitch community and Rabbi Yosef Gansburg, educational director of the Lubavitch Youth Organization.
"We kosher homes of all Jews, no matter if thev
are religibus or not. Rabbi Schochet said in his ; office recently. "We reach professionals. non-professionals, the voung and the bld^'■ . " •.
What encourages 3' Jewish family to become strictly kosher?
"It can come from various angles — the hus^ band, the wife or the children," said Rabbi Schochet, who koshers two kitchens a week. "Parents come in contact with other parents who have problems with intermarriage, or children become involved in a reli-
gious organization or fall into religious circles in Israel."
Once a family decides to becpme kosher, it involves a commitment: monetarily, physically and spir itually. It also entails intensified study of the laws of kashruth. _
Nancy Rosenberg, sec-retan.' at the Lubavitch ; Centre., her husband, Daud. and their two children, Ari Mendle, 16, and Sara Eta, 18, became kosher three years ago. Before that, admits Mrs'. Rosenberg, they were to-taliv unobservant.

TORONTO —
Beth Tikvah recently marked its 13th anniversary- with a special weekend of celebration including an Gneg Shabbat on Friday evening, a special Sabbath" service of rede-: dication and culminating with a banquet on Sunday evening.
This Conservative con^ gregation. with a membership of .650 families, .vas formed in' 1%7 fTX)m a nucleus Of 18 families of the Shaarei Tikvah congregation.
The acquisition of a portable building and a plot of land on Bayview Ave. saw the regtilar functioning of daily, Shabbat, festival arid holyday services and a congregational school in the same facility. The breaking of the ■ground for the present building was held in 1969 and now Beth Tikvah offers unlimited facilities for its membership and for the Jewish community at large.
Beth Tikvah's spiritual' leader since its inception. Rabbi Herbert Feder. has been the guiding light m setting the tone of Torah study, the development of culture studv. commit-
ment to Jewish obser\-ance and assistance to the State of Israel.
The congregational school, with an enrolment in grades 1-12 of 500
students, has active youth groups for ages 7-18. The congregation houses the Bayview branch of the United Synagogue Day School.

JERUSALEM-
The new surgical wing of Bikur Cholim Hospital here will bear the name of the late Rehbetzin Chana Felder. of Toronto.
Mrs. Felder's husband. Rabbi Gedaliah Felder. a renpvvried Tbrah authority and rabbi of Shomrei Shabbos Synagogue, recently visited the hospital to be briefed on the progress of the new wing. He was satisfied that work is well under way on what vvill be one of the nipst ; up-to-date and best equipped surgical wings in the Middle East.
Since 1830, Bikur Cho-. lim Hospital has served
the poor and affluent alike. Located in the heart of downtown Jerusalem (it moved to the new city in 1914) the hospital is now very much overcrowded.
Increasing the capacity of the surgical departinent is a top priority and it is to this end that the Toronto Committee for Bikur Cholim Hospital assumed the responsibilitj- of the new wing. Through an intensive fund-raising campaign, the Toronto group, comprised of medical professionals, rabbis, business and-professional people and others, has been able to underwrite the Chana Felder Surgical Wing.

"Rabbi Schochet and :Rabbi Gansburg came to our hour several timeis.-First, they checked .iny :pantr>: and removed all items that didn't have the kosher symbbl. MK. K, COR or the name of a supervising rabbi. 1
'T^ext was the separa- . tion of milk and meat,** 'added Mrs.; Rosenberg, who now is deeply committed to kashruth and studies at the Lubavitch Centre.
Before a kitchen is ko-shered, there is a trial period of about piie month to get used to the sepa^ ration idea. "In this way. people are prevented from making mistakes later," said Rabbi Gansburg.
The "separation process" is by far the most complex, time-consuming and expensive.
During the rabbis' second visit, the kitchen is totally koshered — a process which takes about three hours. Separate dishes, cutlery, cooking utensils, dish cloths, oven racks, pots, pans, table cloths and mats are assembled. The dishwasher, instructs the rabbi, should preferably be used either for mear or dairy. Counters and sinks must also be divided.
The procedure itself is rather dramatic. All utensils that have come in contact whh heat through cooking miist be immersed in boiling water. Pots, panis and utensils that have come iri contact with dry heat (oven and stove) must be blow-torched until they become red hot. The inside of the oven must be blowiorched as well.
Some items such as china, earthenware, por-- celain or pyrex cannot be koshered because they would crack under intense heat. Thus, the questionof expense arises.
As a special induccv^ ment, the LYO contributes"" 50% of the funds necesr. sary to kosher a kitchen up to a rhaximum of $250. "When people spend money to be kosher, they usually stay kosher,'.'said Rabbi Schochet.
Next comes the food.
"There is a tremendous variety of kosher foods and ; meats available today," stated the rabbi.''It's only ainatterof rria:king women aware." To solve that hurdle, the rehbetzin offers to accompany women on shopping trips.
Home visits tend to OfJen relationships between the family and the rabbi. It also gives them the opportunity to discuss . matters other than kash-rut. "We straighten out problems in their personal lives as well." remarked Rabbi Schochet. "Koshering a home is riot an end to itself," he added. "Every mitzvah is a separate entity. When we are already there, it is; fascinating to see how one mitzvah acts as a springboard for another. Many famihes who have their kitchen, koshered, then start to send their children to Hebrew school, then they start obser\*ihg the Sabbath. Then the husband puts on tefellin and prays daily...It's a chain reaction."
Nancy Rosenberg admits it was her teena;ge son who convinced the family to become kosher
after nieetirig the head of the Lubavitch movement in London, Ont .a few years ago. * '-And there has been no turning back since."
Now Mrs. Rosenberg wears a shetl (wig), went io the riiikvah where she felt "reborn" and adinits being less liervoljs. "I'm confident about my Jew-ishness. Ifeelthe world on top of my shoulders has been lifted."
Her husband, Davids who is a travelling salesman, puts on tefellin on the road., He even travels with his own pots wrapped in tinfoil. "

Can Spring be far behind if the grade nines at the Associated Hebrew Schools are having their annual Spring Tea and Fashion Show this coming Sunday? Organizers Esther Tylman, Karen Mayer, Sandl Amiel and Shira Hermant, are happy with the way ticket sales are going and feel confident that the proceeds (all for UJA) will exceed the $3,000 that was raised last year.
Tickets at $4.00 per person, may be purchased at the door on the day of the show — Sunday, March 9, at 2:00 p.m. at 3630 Bathurst Street.
■ ■'■ * ' ' ■.
Looks like this Sunday will be a busy day for the community. That's when the annual meeting of Toronto Jewish Congress will also be held. It takes place at Beth Tzedec Synagogue, starting at 2:00 p.m. If you want to know just how UJA dollars are allocated for local needs, that's the place to be.
With the Student and Young Adults campaign nearing the $50,000 mark, many of the young people are now lending a. hand in other divisions. A number of them came out for a telethon last week, to cover cards in Business and Professions and managed to raise $6,000 during the evening. On hand were David Golden, Noah Fonnan, Esther Slalomon, Martin Papemlck and Helen Singer.

A great many completed cards were turned in at the canvassers Purim party last- week. As I announced on that evening, we've raised over $11 million and we're well past the midway point in the campaign, so you can see there is still much to be done before we wind up the 1980 campaign.
■ ■ ■ * ' * ' * ■
• And speaking of the Purim party, it was' a very informal, relaxed evening and provided an excellent opportunity for canvassers to get together and "schmooze'* at this stage of the campaign. Aellta, along with two instrumentalists, gave us dose to an hour of most enjoyable entertainment. A native of Riga, she has a remarkably fluent repertoire of songs and patter in English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, Spanish — you name it.

The campaign for faculty at York University and the University of Toronto is under way, according to a report from Rabbi Martin Lockshin, who's looking after the
distribotion of cards.

Pearl Teitelbanm, co-chairman of the York student campaign, is excited about the upcoming Monte Carlo Night this Saturday, March 8. h will be held at the Vanier/Founders halls, starting at 8:30 p.m., with the Steve Shapiro band providing the live music. Along with dancing, there will be games and prizes — big ones, I'm told. They hope to outdo last year's attendance of 600 and to raise lots of money, of course.
The date set for the 11th annual UJA walkathon is Sunday, May 25. Vem Chelhi and Geny Panetj who are this.year's chairmen, have met on a number of occasions with their working committee. They are determined to involve the schools — both day and afternoon more than ever before.
We'Ilbereportingon their plans and progress as they materialize.
Professor Irwin Cotler will address a cocktail reception of the Lawyers division at Beth Tzedec Synagogue on Wednesday. March 12. Division chairman, Leonard Fine, is expecting a heavy turnout of his colleagues for what will undoubtedly be a thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating few hours. Invitations have been sent to everyone in the division, so please be sure to join your colleagues all you ladies and gentlemen in the legal profession.

CANVASSER OF THE WEEK- We can't recall a meeting or function that Nat Harwich has failed .to attend this year. He's truly one of the most dependable campaigners around, and: most important, he has staying power. Nat's been a fervent UJA supporter, canvasser, work-er~you name; it^-for many , years. He's never lost his enthusiasm for UJA and what it stands for. This year he's Synagogue division chairman and doing a superb job, just as we hS6 expected. Keep it up, Nat, you and UJA are a great combination.
