B> RABBI MEIR GOTTESMAN
! Parsbat Vaylkra — Weekly Habuha: Before : Pesacbv all pockets sbonld be checked for chometz
It takes a wise man to know when to stop. Each ; Jew should realize his limitations.
In a certain town, a rabbi forced his way into the : pulpit because of his government connections. He ; wasn't worthy of the post, but despite the : community's efforts to get rid of hini, he always : returned to his position.
Rabbi Shmuel Mohliver once visited the town, : and when he saw the situation he called the rabbi aside and said: "You know, our j-abbis teach that a dead animal is better than a talmud chochom who doesn't have brains. -
"h's strange, though — why such an insulting comparison? But a dead animal, once you throw it out, it doesn't come back. But a rabbi without saychel — every time you try to get rid of him, he keeps on returning..."
Modesty is the most beautiful quality a Jew can have. This week's parsha begins with a tiny aleph, because Moses wanted to humble himself. Maimonidies states that in all things, a person should be moderate, except for modesf)r and humility — that should be taken to an extreme.
Only a fool show's off. Our rabbis taught that a person who runs after honors, the honors run away from him. A person who runs away from honors, honor pursues him.
Said Reb Yitzchak Shmelcke: "Honor runs away from those who pursue it. But when a person is so hungry for it that he runs even harder to grab it. in the end he can catch it. That's why a lot of unworthy people receive honors!"
* * • ,
One thing, though — it's good to be humble about oneself, but not to put down someone else.
Once the Radumsker Rebbe niade a shidduch for his daughter with a Gerer Hassid. He sent one of his relatives to check the groom for his qualities, and to see what type of people the Gerer Hassidim were.
When the relative returned, the Radumseker aske°d him: "Is it true what I hear about Ger—that they are so humble ,they consider themselves nothings?"
Sighed the relative: "It's true. The trouble is they consider other people even smaller nothings..;" (Fun Unzer Alten Oitzer) ,* * *
The great sage Rava prayed for three things. He said that two were granted him — the wisdom of Rav Huna, and the wealth of Rav Qiisda. The third, the humility of Rabbah bar bar Huna, was : not granted.
The question — why did he ask for humility last, : after wealth and wisdom? Because if he didn't : bave wealth or wisdom, what did he have to be conceited about? But once he was rich and wise, then there was a danger he would start boasting.
So they ask — why wasn't humility granted him? But the truth is that it was given to hini.i.and the proof is.that Rava didn't consider himself humble. The greatest sign of huihijity is when a person doesn't consider himself humble;
Chometz. the yeasty bread, represents pride. The thin, wafer matzoh represents humility. Before Pesach, every Jew should work on his middot, his personal qualities, throw away all the chometz in his character and come humble before G-d. .

the Magen David Adoni is a voluntary organization established in 1950 by a special Knesset law as the sole body authorized to carry out thoJse functions allocated by the Geneva Convention to Red Cross Societies. •
The MDA was prijginally founded in Tel Aviv in 1930 as a first aid society, following the 1929 Hebron riots. In this pre-state period- it served many important functions such as helping immigrants, tending the wounded^m the riots and bombings, and dispatching welfare teams to Europe to aid refugees from the war.
Today the MDA's staff and its thousands of volunteers, its branches ambulances; bloodmobiles, stores and sophisticated communications system make up an integrated network which permits it to carry out all those tasks allocated to it in times of peace as well as in times of emergency. ,
In 1955, Israel issued a single commemorative marking MDA's 25th anniversary.

Professor Invin Cotler surpassed himself in an address to the Lawyers' meeting at Beth Tzedec Synagogue last week. Prof. Cotler spoke of his experiences last August when he was iexpelled from the Soviet Union.
Anatoly Shschanuisky and all the other "refuseniks" "represent us all.. • they are the symbols and substance ^ of the Jews of our time," he said.
He recalled in detail, the most emotional experience of his brief stay in Moscow — attending Sabbath services at the Great N^oscow Synagogue, where for the first time, Israelis addressed their Russian Jewish brothers and sisteris, in Yiddish. The Russians were told: '-We are the guarantors of each bther's destiny—your struggle is our struggle."
That, I believe, isthemost important-message that we in the UJA campaign can bring to our fellow Jews ... that we really are one and responsible for one another.
Bob Hall was almost as eloquent as Cotler when he thanked him in our behalf.
Leonard Fine, chairman of the division, arranged for a follow-up two-day Lawyers' telethon which was held in the boardroom of Goodman & Cart. ■
RabbrHeniyHosclianider of Shaairei Shomayim, sent along a letter he received from a congregant who really took to heart the Rabbi's message from the pulpit.on UJA Sabbath last month. ;
The person who wrote the Rabbi had already made a UJA contribution, but was so moved by what the Rabbi said, sent an additional gift.
.Our thanks to Rabbi Hoschander for telling our story so well and to the contributor for responding in such a positive manner.

Dr. Dennis Bader, Optometrists' chairman, has arranged a very interesting breakfast meeting for Sunday,.March 30, in the Wilket Creek Room of the Inn on the Park. The guest speaker will be Dr. Gerald Feldman, vice-president of Soft Lenses Inc., San Diego, Calif. Invitations have gone out to all members of the Optometrists group. It sounds as though it will be a fascinating morning, even from a layman's view.
When family and friends of Chaim [Harvey] Fddman,
UJA'chairman of the Farcins (Borochov) Branch of the Labor Zionist Alliance, decided to throw him a party to celebrate his 65th birthday, they abided by his wishes to abstain from buying any personal gifts. Instead, guests made contributions to UJA in Chaim Feldman's name.
The party, which took place on March 8th, in addition to being a lot of fun, also raised enough money, for a schofarship to be set up for a student in. Israel.
Great idea for the man who has everything going for him... to celebrate a simcha and provide much-needed help for someone else at the same time.
' Despite the snowstorm and hazardous driving conditions, 275 students came out for the Monte Carlo night at York University on Saturday, March 8th.
Chairman of the event, David Golden and Noah Forman, tell us that $1^300 was raised and that some great prizes were donated. Steve Shapiro, whose band supplied the music^ donated the services of his combo for the evening.
After some deliberation, the walkathon committee under the joint chairmanship of Vem Chelln and Jetiy. Panet, has come up with this year's slogan —' 'Walk for the Youth of Israel."
The 11th annual event will be held on Sunday; May 25 and will.have a definite sports and Olympics tie-in. The route has been finalized, with some minor changes from/ that of last year. Well-known sports figures will be' contacted and there will be many extra attractions for the youngsters. We'll keep you informed as they materialize, ■ •

CANVASSER OF THE WEEK- Here's a fresh new face on' the UJA scene. It belongs to Earl Puilan, a real estate broker by profession, who, by his own admission, decided it was time for him to take an active role in the campaign. A UJA contributor for many years, this is Earl's first time out as .a canvasser and he's jumped in with both feet. He's involved with the Construction division, and from" all '';accounts,_doing-a'first-r.ate canvassing job. We trilst that this is just the beginning of a long and' lasting "working'' relationship' between Earl and UJA!
