So you-want to go to Israel to live?
The programs available _throuigh the local Israel Aliyah Centre eover every-thing~from helping you make up your mind to arranging job retraining (if hecessaiy) and a mortgage for your new home in Israel.
For. those only nibbling at the edge of certainty, signing up with the North American Aliyah Movement (N A AM) would probably be a good first sfep, according to Uri Broides, director of the Toronto; centre.
Frieda Wozhicav Toronto co-ordinatbr and vice-president of NAAM's Ca^ nadiah region, explains:
"NAAM is for people who are thinking of going to Israel and would like to know more about living there. The potential oleh is
signed up with a group of like-minded people for discussions and'lectures at meetings once a month,:
"NAAM members also receive a b»-n>onthly ■ magazine, Ayalon;; a copy of Coming Home, a practical planning guide for Jiving in Israel; a discount on the weekly English edition of The Jerusalem Post;andachancetogo on two or threb-week semir niars to Israel,'' said Mrs. Moznica. '. ^
While rising.with North American inflation, the cost of these seminars — air fare, room and board in Israel — remains substantially lower than group tours, she added. A two-week NAAM tour out of New York in March cost participants about $600
:-:U.s. ■■ :■■
Yeariy membership in NAAM is $15 for a family, $10 for an indiyidiialand $5 for a student. ■
Finding employment in Israel can be a crucial
. consideration. Discreet job seiarches can be requested at the aliya office,-which transmits inquiries and resumes to potential employers in Israel through a special bureau : "If there is interest . shown in meeting a candidate — no oner after all, is hired sight unseen — potential olim are given fare reductions,!' said: VVozniea. A person going on his own will get back $200. But he. or she must contact the aliya office ahead of time with details of the job searchi and get official approval, she ciau-tioned.
"Alternately, the individual can go with a two-: week. group pilot tour,'' she said. "These are arranged four times a year for people scross North America as a flight, and accommodation package that is considerably cheaper than a private arange-ment."

for what is translated from the Hebrew into the "movenient for Zionist fulfilment" —is a "motiv-atibn reinforcement group'' vvhose programs are basedjon the premise that aliya is the only objective of Zionism. A constituent of the Canadian Zionist Federation, TELEM is cbmpbsed-mairily ofyiiniversity students and newly graduated young singles. Members of any age group are welcomed, TELEM representatives empha-size.
Orof Yerushalayim, a pre-aliya group started by Rabbi Meir Berglass in Toronto for strictly observant Jews, may also be contacted through the aliya office. Rabbi Berglass, foriner: spiritual 'leaderof the Shaarei Tefil-lah Congregation, made aliya last year.
A chapter of the Association of Parents of American Israelis, for parents of North American olim, was started in Toronto in March. The chairwoman is
Mrs. Victor Sefton.
"APAI alleviates one of the main concerns of olim — leaving their parents behind," said Woznica. Monthly meetings, newsletters, periodic group tours and ham radio oper-ations, among: other things, link parents to their children in Israel and to each other, ".aoseness is maintained as much as possible under the circumstances," Woznica pointed out. ''It makes the olim feel a little less guilty for going, vyithout their parents.
"Also, it encourages the parents themselves to think about making aliya."
Once in Israel, the oleh can avail himself of his connections with these groups as an introdiiction to his new society.
"The first place the new oleh goes to is an ulpan, an absorption centre, to: study Hebrew and acclim-iatize . himself,'' said Broides. At the sarne time, he or she is given the opportunity to look for a job.
Broides pointed out that, the five or sjx-month stay with room and board costs the oleh about 530 a month. The bulk of the cost is subsidized by the Israel Aliyah Centre, ultiy mat el y funded by the World Zionist >Organiza-tion.
Various assistance_pr6-, grams are available to the new oleh. Because their terms are somewhat comr plicated and may vary from individual to individual, they can only be suggested here. They include: custoitis rights on appliances, furniture and a car; rental subsidies; mortgage assistance (settlers in development towns, for example; receive much better terms than would-be Jerusalem-ites): retraining programs (computer programming arid tourism are very big right now in Israel); and foreign currency privileges.
The latter is worth some elaboration. .Olim who were more established in the Diaspora often leave
their assets outside Israel, takirig intd the country only the divideiids. Israel, however, anxious to obtain foreign reserves, offers a_seven-year period ■ of exemption frbrn local taxes on interest from foreign assets: based in Israel. As well, olim are ; allowed to keep the original funds in foreign currency for-up to 20 years in-Israeli banks;
Loans are available on one-way flights to Israel and for air-freighting be-, longings there. "These loans are made in Israeli currency at a rate unlinked to the U.S. dollar," Broides pointed out. "Because the Israeli rate of inflation ha:s been much greatei-than the U.S., the actual value of the money repaid will be less than what was borrowed."
Loans are made in various areas to oHm on a ratio of linked and unlinked repayments. The larger the unlinked portion, the cheaper the loan will ultiniately be to pay back.
