Shul honors rahhi for 25 years of service

TORONTO —
Rabbi Albert Pappen-heim will. be honqred by Beth David B'nai Israel Beth Am in celebration of his 25 years of service to the congregation.
His congregation has planned a series of special, events, including speakers, music and dance; for the weekend Feb. 27-March 1. The anniversary theme is "The Jews of Germany — a Living Heritage."
Born in Frankfurt-on-Main, Rabbi Pafjpenheini^ was rajsed in the milieu of German-Jewish neo-orthodoxy which coin-bined Torah tradition with secular study; He was able to leave Germany shortly after kristallnacht (Nov. 10, 1938) and studied at yeshivot in Gateshead and London, England.
During World War II. he was interned and shipped to Canada. After his'release in 1942. he studied'at Yeshiva Torah Chaim and the University of Toronto. Upon receiving his smicha. B.A., and M.A. degrees, he served as principal of Bais Yehuda Talmud Torah and as spiritual leader in St. Catharines, Ont. and Lexington, Ky.

serve the fledgling Beth David Congregation, which had Been founded in 1954.
In addition to his rabbinical duties, he has held various position^ of leadership in the community: president of the Toronto Board of Rabbis; chairman of the United Synagogue Education Commission, Ontario Region; and executive director of the United Synagogue, Ontario Region. He is now the president of the Rabbinical Assembly, Ontario Region.,

Shaked to lecture

Dr. Haim Shaked, the first director of the East African section of Tel Aviv University's Shiloah Institute and, until 1980, a senior research fellow at the same institution, will give a 3-part lecture series under the aegis of Beth Tzedec's Beth Midrash program beginning on the evening of March 4. •
The Shiloah Institute is a renowned Israeli study centre for Arab affairs.
The general theme of the Beth Tzedec series is "Israel and' the Middle East." The first lecture, "The Roots of the Arab-Israeli Conflict." will begin at 8 p.m. on March 4; the second. "Implications of the Iraqi^Iranian War for the Middle East!" at 8 p.rii. on March 11; and the third, "The Palestinian Dilemma." at 8 p.m'. on March 18.
There is a registration fee for the lecture series.
Divinity (honoris causa) by thie Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
The anniversary celebration for Rabbi Pappenheim will begbi on Friday at 8 p.m. at an Oneg ShiEibbat service. Guest spealters will be Rabbi J^. Gantber Plant, senior scholar of the Holy Blossom Temple, and Rabbi Joseph Kelmaii of JBeth Emeth Bais Yehqda Congregation. Cantor Efram Sapir will officiate.
At 9 a.m. on Shabbat, Rabbi Erwin Schild of Adath Israel Congregation will give the sermon. Members of the congregation and the United Synagogue Youth chapter will participate in the service service. .
In the evening, Melava Malka, including music and dancing with Yitzhak Argaman and his Israeli orchestra, will begin at 8 p.m. The floor show includes Brian S. Nasimok, Toronto comedian and television star, and the Nirkoda Hassidic Dancers. (This event is by reserVation only — admission is $3.50 per person — please call 633-5500.)
The Sunday morning service at 9 will be followed by a breakfast meeting; sponsored by the brotherhood. Here the guest speaker will be Irving Matlow, the executive director of the Israeli Soldiers' Fund and an expert on stories by Sholom Aleichem.
An anniversary concert featuring classical synagogue arid secular Jewish music of the 19th and 20th centures will be the grand finale on Sunday at 8 p.m; Cantor Efram Sapir wilhbe accompanied by a professional choir and instrumental ensemble under the direction of Ben Steinberg, director of music at Temple Sinai. Admission is free.
EISEN NAMED TO BOARD
Toronto lawyer, Roliert Elsen, second vice-president of Beth Tzedec Congregation, and chairman of its adult education committee, has been named as co-chairman of the Ontario Environmental Assess-ment Board. -
WIN PRIZES
The Toronto firm of Saffer, Cravlt a;nd Ereedman Advertising Inc. won top prizes for Ben Moss Jewelers and Junors (the kitchen collection) at the ■ 29th annual retail advertisuig conference in Chiciago.
This year's conference, which hosted over 400
retail ad people from North America, plus delegates from Australia, New Zealand, England and France, was the largest such gathering ever.
Saffer, Cravit and Freedmah garnered five major awards, including first prizes for Winnipeg-based jeweler, Ben Moiss, and Toronto-based Junors Kitchen Collection.,Awards of excellence also went to Saffer, Cravit and Freedman campaigns for Fair-weather, Big Steel Man and Willy Wonderful. _
The company took first prize at the National Retail Merchants Association convention in New York for its Town Shoes campaign, "TalkoftheTownti."
Stephen Lewis
TORONTO —
Stephen Lewis, former leader of the New Democratic Party of Ontario, has agreed to serve as regional chairman of, the Israel Histadrut campaign in Ontario and Torontb.
Lewis, a native of Ottawa, was educated in Toronto at Harbord Gpl-legjate Institute and the University of Toronto. After completing courses at the University of British
Columbia, he taught for two years in various parts of Africa.
Upon his return to Canada, he became the first NDP national director of organization and, in 1963, was elected to the first of four successive terms in the Ontario provincial legislation. In 1970, he became leader of the NDP. He retired from politics in 1978.
