TORONTO —
Like so many others, . Fred Metter returned from a United Jewish Appeal mission. to~lsrael with a totally new perspective which-initiated a re-eyaluation of his personal priorities.
"1 had been to Israel a-fev/ times before I went on the UJA Prime Minister's Mission in October," he said, "but this trip was a completely different experience for me. I came back and reassessed what I was doing in the Jewish community and decided to become more involved."
As chairman of the Jewellers Division, Metter
Fred Metter
has jumped into the 1981 campaign with unbridled zeal. When asked how
many cards he's covered to date, he thought for a moment before replying: "I know it's more' than" 100, but don't ask me for an exact'count v"
At 34, Toronto-born Fred Metter is upwardly mobile in the business world. He's vice-president of merchandising for Peoples Jewellers, a chain with 300 stores across Canada. Married, he and ■his wife Marsha are the parents of 8-mohth-old , daughter, Elana Yonit.
During an interview at his office,.Metter expressed concern about the need for a deeper commitment to Israel and the local

Jewish community on the part of young people, the _"me'' generation, as he put it.
"We've had it easy living in Canada, and . that's given us a sense of false security," he commented. "Given the cur-TentTyblitical 'climate — the bombings in Paris and the general rise in anti-semitism — it would be^ great mistalce if we allo^ ourselves to become complacent and take things for granted."
Metter's own involvement didn't come about overnight, he admits. He began canvassing in the Jewellers group in the 1975-76 campaign. Up to now his principal outside activity has been with the Canadian Jewellers Association.
"An hidastrlal commitment wasn't enough," Metter said. "I felt I wasn't giving ample time to the Jewish community
and this year UJA is my priority, but I don't look at it as a one-year commit-' ment — it's ongbhig."
In;addition to canvassing his colleagues in the Jewelery business. Fred Metter has covered cards in the Major Gifts Division as well. "1 don't accept any pledge without an increase,"he emphasizes, "and I have managed to get a lot of new gifts, too."
To what does he attribute his success as a canvasser?
"I try to get across my own belief that UJA gives the contributor the best return on the biick," he says. "It's so allrencom-- passing in the needs and services it helps to fund and that's what is so ;»important for us to understand. It's the price we should pay for being Jews ... I think of it as Jewish income tax, but even better, you get a receipt."
