receint Canadian International Footwear Exhibition at Place Bona-venture;
A veritable phantasr magoria of everythi ng for. the human foot — from billy-boots to pumps — was seen at the show, "which marked the beginning of the annual mad rush in the shoe industry to secure the new styles for the coming seasons.
"This is the kickoff of the spring 1982 shoe season,'' explained Frances Kelley, public relations director of the Footwear Bureau of Canada. The show, an annual event in Montreal, was organized by the Shoe Manufacturers Association of Canada, to give Canadian retailers and importers a glimpse at the new fashions in footwear.
For women, the shoe styles bear a heavy French influence. Bronzed-leather shoes will be in, as well as woven leathers. But the big thing, it seems, are the "metallies," leather shoes with silverorgiltfinish.
Open sandals will still be in but pumps are a newer attraction. The stress will also be on lower heels, or pancake heels, because of rising hemlines, and the importance of wearing shoes that are comfortable.
■ For men, the Western boot look will be back, but the-boots will be shorter this time
around. Originally a North American fashion, the cowboy boot look has become a world trend, and will still be standard farejpr both ~ men and wornen. This is more than a mere fad — It's here to stay, say the manufacturers,
Shoe stores will again be stocking their spring and summer shelves With moccasins for women — a heavy seller last yiear — and penny-loafers for men who want the conservaltive, preppy look. The loafers are popular with the young crowd but only the real, leather ones, with the pennies inside — no ersatz please! Also for men there will be Robin Hood boots: (ight-colored boots, with the tops turned down. •
Last but not least, children's shoes- will have the latest cartoon character or a famous baseball player embossed on them.
As for colors, pastels will dominate: yellows, pinks, blues and off-whites. The more formal leather shoes will sport neutral khaki colors, often decorated by a metallic seam binding. Leather-on-leather will be in too, and red will be considered a neutral color.
Canvas shoes, or es-padrilles, will be in stylein "fun colors."
In general, the coming colors in shoes will be subdued, transition- ' al colors, so as to ease gently intothe season.
