By RABBI MEIR URl GOTTESMAN
- Parshat B'haalbtecha
There are many lights, but the. brightest light is from holiness and purity. :
hissaid of Reb .Moredechai;of Nadvornah that he used to light 1.112 candies each Shabbat in his Beis Medrash and home — a number equal to the gematria of Shabbat Kodeish. -.
He-wanted to fulfill the mitzvah of Shabbat candles with the finest candles available. But there was a problem — the company imprinted.its name on each candle, making it unfit, for the rebbe's use. .
The rcbbe's followers pleaded with the firm to . produce Candles without any imprint. The company agreed, but only if the rebbe made an order worth at least 3,000 gold pieces. The rebbe agreed. The candles were manufactured, and they were called the holy Nadvornah Candles. ...
This.parsha deals with light. The Al-mighty gave instructions about the offerings at the holy MishJcan (Tabernacle):' A'nasi (prince) of each tribe had brought in offerings.;But Aaron. High Priesr of Levi, brought nothing.
Worried Aaron: "Woe is me! Maybe because of . my transgression (of the Golden Calf) the tribe of Levi will not be allowed to offer?'* Said the Almighty: "Indeed, your offering will be greater than the others! Someday the temple will be, destroyed, arid the sacrifices interrupted. But vo.ur mitzvah — of being the lamp-lighter — will last forever. . . .".
The Temple is no longer. But the same light that burned in the menorah lights each home on Erev Shabbat. The woman who lights the candles Friday before sunset is like the High Priest in the Sanctuary'.
The menorah: in the sanctuary was lit in an interesting way. The three lights on one side, and the three lights on the other, all faced towards the centre light. Why?
The centre light represented the holiness of Shabbat. The other six lights represented the si\ days of the week. During the week we get involved m pUr mundand. transitory problems. We forget about our neshamas and how holy we are. Suddenly, come Friday afternoon, we want to leap : mto the Shabbat, sense the kedusha.
But something is missing. It feels cold. What? : Can a car suddenly warm up on a freezing day? Can a person who never prays w-ith feeling, who never sits and studies Torah during the week, or picks up a book on Chassidus or mussar, jump into Sha.bbat and feel something? . ;
"El mui p'nai ha'menorahlTo the face of the ■ Holy Menorah! . . ." The six days of the week have to face the centre, the Shabbat. A Jew has to live in such a way every we'ekday that he will be ■ ready to greet the Shabbat.
Interesting .. . the gematria of the word nairot [candles] equals 656, the same value as the word ; Yerushalayim.
A Jew is what he wantSrto be. A certain Reb Meir lived in Eretz Yisrael. He decided to-leave Israel, raise.money for a year or two, so that he could spend his later years in Israel. Year passed : vear. and he still didn't return.
fle was met by an E/etz Ylsrael Jew who was on ; a brief visit to chul [chutz la'aretz, the diaspora]. ''When are you returning to Eretz Yisrael?" he : wasasl<ed. ,
"Im >irtzeh Hashem, if G-d wants, soon, I : hope," he answered:
Retorted the Sabra: "Dont say 'if G-d wants.' G-d wants his childjren to be m the Holy Land! Say 'when Reb Meir wajnts!'"
May we be worthy of Jerusalem soon. Shabbat Shalom.

R a b b i Z ig m u n d Wolkenstein, director of this Israel Frankel Jewish Public Library, is singing a happier tune since the officiaL opening of^ th& library's new music room last week. .
According to Rabbi Wolkenstein, the: music room, vyhich contains excellent sound reproduction facilities and Toronto's first. collection of exclusively Jewish music, both of which are available to the public, is "probably unique in Ontario.':'
At opening ceremonies, Cantor A. Eliezer Kirshblum, chairman of the Toronto Council of Hazza-nim, presented the key tO; the room to Meyer Feldman. president of the library. The creation of the room was a joint project undertaken by the library, the Board of Jewish Education and the cantors' council. ;
Records and sheet music-belonging to the. BJE were donated to the library and resources were accrued through proceeds from concerts given by the association. The library reshuffled its resources to create the necessary space and additional funding was arranged through a Wintario grant.
"This is an origoing commitment by the cantors' association," said Wolkenstein. "The cantors give concerts two or three times a year and last year they concentrated on directing funds to the establishment of . the music room. "He expects that local cantors will continue to contribute records, tapes and sheet, music to the library.
The room features three . stereographic listening

Although Israel's military position at present is practically -unchallenge-' able, Israel will have to continue, to live -by ■ the svvord if it expects tosur-' vive, says:John Gcllner. a professor at York University and editor of the 'Canadian Defence Quarterly;
Speaking at a public seminar sponsored by the Community Action for Israel Committee (Canadian Jewish Congress) last week. Cellncrsaid Israel's safety stems from her military superiority. "In the short term, the military position of Israel is better than it ever was. In the Middle East no one_ is capable of challenging Israel militarily," he noted.
"Israel's biggest opponent was Egypt, but it appears Egypt will stick with the Camp David agreements. Egypt, got everythingit wanted out of Camp David, so for it there
is nothing more to gain through the use of military forces," Gellner surmised.
However, the long term outlook is not promising,, he added.
"The chances for: a general peace settlement in the Middle East are now practically nil; and the opportunity for peace, if there ever was one, is past. To survive, Israel will have to live by the sword for a long time to come," claimed Gellner.
• A prolonged dependence on military might for survival could cripple Israel's economy, which even.now-is suffering from an annual.innation,rate of 117 %:, Although the Iran/ Iraq war has shown that the Arabs are incapable of using the—sophisticated sveaponry available to them, the constant arms'" buildupby the Arabs forces" Israel to spend more and more of its Gross National Product on military equipment in order to keep up;
The incredible expenditure of 27% of its GNP on
military equipment is out of all reason, said Gellner. "But is necessaiy for Israel's survival. It is Is-
rael's ability to keep pace in the arms buildup that, more than anything else, will determine its future."

centres for private use and. additional loudspeakers for group listening. Amplifiers, speakers - and other equipment was cus-"^ tom-built by KeniietJL Maison, a man "familiar: with good-quality sound equipment j" according to the rabbi.
The library has abpiit 125recordson file — allof which are newly bought — and about 200 cassette tapes. The tapes will be circulated to the public., while phonograph records will be designated as reference ma,terial.
The music now available at the library does.not
include anything Wolkenstein yt-ould call' particularly old, rare or valuable.: "But," h£;Said, "it is very likely that old records and sheet music will be coming ■.in;"
Some of Ihe music which comprisesthe existing collection includes' cantorial and liturgical works, as well as choir niusic — much of which comes from Jewish day schools throughout Toronto.
Some of the music has come from private individuals and the library would like to see that trend continue. Wolkenstein said that W'hen records are
brought to the library they are taped and kept on file
^ in that manner.i The
V library will accept new records, but ; is wary of using older discs on its high-quality eiquipmeht. Wolkenstein .said he
; "hopes the music room will be a living room — not just a ' storehouse for music." To that end the
. library is planning music events for seniors, and schoolchildren are already being brought to the facility to partake of music prograrns.
For details on the music room's public hours call the library at 781-6282 or 781-8065.
